Ive started polishing up the plenum off my old 'Wasp'.

 

Trouble is, every time am on my own with the dog and try to use the dremel, he goes out and howls!

I'm strating off with the dremel and grinder attachment to knock off the worst, and the casting marks then is grafting away with the wet n dry after that.

Going to be slow progress but taking pics along the way... :)

i would only use a dremel for the very tight bits. I used a file sander for in between the vanes and large sanding disc for the rest otherwise it will all be uneven. I realised the mistake in using a dremel after i used it.

You need to get a variable speed die grinder from Metabo.Thats what I use.Superb tool.I think I paid £187.00 for mine.You is a busy little bee lol.

Just a little bit lol.Dremal type tools are not up to the job,I have got through about six so far thats why I got the die grinder.Can't fault it.

Going to get mine chromed, as I would imagine that once polished and back on the engine with the coilpacks etc in place it would be a p.i.t.a to keep it polished with all the nooks and crannys

good luck finding somewhere that will do a good job, at a reasonable price and the job lasting.

2 down sides to chroming, if the part isn't prepared properly, i.e. all casting marks removed etc. then it doesn't look as pretty and a couple of people have had stuff chromed before and the chrome has started to peel under the heat of the engine, although I think that comes down to WHERE you get it chromed and how they chrome it etc.

It's a case of getting it on the bench and starting to have a look at least at the moment - Just poking at it with what I have to hand. Tool shopping time then ... ooh and I really hate doing that ;)

I did mine by hand. i didnt use any tools. it can be done without it just takes longer.

 

I expect yours to look like this tomorrow :lol::lol:

Theres a place local to me that does chroming for classic bike and jaguar restorers,are reasonably priced and its very long lasting.They were recommended to me by a friend that had a lot of Mustang engine parts chromed and if he trusted his Mustang to them thats good enough for me, as the majority of their work is by word of mouth :)

Day 2 then, no power tools at all today, just good ol' wet 'n' dry paper and elbow grease, she aint doin bad considering she's out the house at work from 6-7am and isn't back until about the same time in the evening

Seriously Alex, you are no where near the wet and dry stage yet, so tell Rose to stop killing herself :biggrin: I did mine with as much machining as possible ( being a lazy git) and then before the cutting and polishing mops, hit it with wet and dry. As long as you havent taken a load of gouges out of the metal, machine it as much as you can till you feel and see the smoothness, obviously upping the grade for each pass.

 

Mine took me over 60 hours roughly, so hopefully you will take my advice or you wont see Rose again till the summer.

I have no control over these things, nor involvement, lol. This is her stuff, she only uses tools for the stuff she absolutely has to for the most part, the rest is done by hand. Same applies to things like the dash mods.

 

EDIT: I should also probably state quite clearly, that if I dared to go near one of her projects with a 'machine', the 'machine' would probably be used on me, so I find it best to do as she says with these things.

Just set off with normal sandpaper 1st , I set off the the green 60 grit down to the yellow stuff 80grit then i started with the wet and dry. She will be there forever doing it the way she is and she will use loads of the stuff.
