Ok a bit random but im sure there is a few on here that have had a slipped disc/herniated disc or whatever you wanna call it. Did you use a back lumbar support band type thing in your recovery?

Featured Replies

Yip, had it and get it often still !

It's so soar that you can't move as it feels like your back is in full spasm.

After I could eventually move I went for acupuncture with electric pulse theropy!

They put the needles in you back and hook you up and run electrical current into your

back but it just feels like its vibrating.

Helped loads and back was back to normal after a few sessions.

I have the problem in my lower back L5-S1 disc and i was just reading more into it and thinking that maybe a lumbar support belt thing may well help me out. At the moment the disc is resting on my nerve so a bit painful but it comes and goes as to how bad it is then if i try and do a workout i just piss it off and it swells up and rests on the nerve more lol.

I was thinking one of these belts could at least hold it in the right place all day as i have a physio mate that thinks it is Spondylolisthesis where your vertebrae shifts out of place

maybe this?

I've had a warped disc and had to change my pads a few times....does that count?

Yeah, I compressed/slipped a disc when I was in my twenties. Thought I was having a heart attack and couldn't move. iirc they gave me diclofenic (Voltarol) and decodamol or something like that. That helped but I still occasionally get a twinge every now and again 15 years later. I just know to take it easy if the back starts twinging.

Ah yeah i was trying to get Prednisolone but they wont give me steroids lol everything i come up with they say that they dont prescribe that over here and its probably the treatment in the US. Tight buggers all i get it brufen gel and bloody paracetamol. Sometimes its just easier to get your own drugs

You may as well rub bisto on it than ibuprofen Gel. You could try Voltarol and over the counter paracetamol and codien(sp?). The pain your probably getting is more likely caused by your back twisting to compensate for the slipped disc. This causes your muscles to stretch and ache and stiffens your whole body.

Never tried a back brace but since it'll keep your back straight I can't see it not helping, so worth a try. Be careful with the codien though as it's very addictive. The voltarol will help your muscles relax and the codien should deal with the pain.

Jane may have more info since she's the forum nurse. lol

Get the brace Marty, it can only help and doesn't cost the earth bud. I use a similar one when my back gives me grief. I find it helps quite a bit.

 my mate can't take it sends him nuts..

I believe I did a few months ago, pain like I've never felt before! Was one of the only times I've hoped there is a God and he would help me. The only way I could sleep was to wear a weight lifting belt and even then it was just bareable. I've since bought a back support made my Vulkan and swear by it and wear it when ever lifting or running now. The heat it keeps in also feels like it helps ;)

As already said, it's worth trying one and see how you get on.

I have a herniated disk L4 L5. I have tried everything from an inversion table, chiropractors, osteopaths, acupuncture, tens machine, acupuncture, steroid injections into the spine.

They were going to operate on me and I did a web search.

Never ended up going under the knife.

Got a book from a guy called Robin McKenzie 'treat your own back'

(if my memory serves me correctly) Not saying it will suit you but well worth a good read.

Heat is also your friend, invest in a heat pad.

Have managed to get to the point where I live a pretty normal life with it. Still a bit stiff in the mornings but have since managed to do pretty much everything from mountain biking to football/running since.

Oh thats promising then. At the moment they are trying me on traction with injections in the pipeline. Mine is a very minor prolapse so they keep saying on L5/S1 but every physio seems to have a different view on treating it so i think ill go with their stuff and do my own way as well. Just bought a RDX back support thing. I have a heat pad that goes in the microwave too so that can go on at the same time.

just don't get despondent you will recover.

Like I say heat is your friend. I have a nice electric pad.

Don't bother with superficial tens machines and ointments they are just a waste of cash. I don't take any pain killers any more either. although I did have my favourite combination when it was chronic.

If things get to the point where you are in a chronic spasm I did find that steroid injections helped me. NHS or private

Another thing you need to concentrate on is core stability (when you feel able) It will help to get things into balance and help prevent further grief.

Hamstring stretching is also really important. I stretch these every morning.

Get that book and have a read it may help.

Yeah im pretty hot on gym training anyway due to the nature of my job. I have been doing some routines to help with core stability yoga is good for it. I think a combination with everything will sort it in the end but its just a pain as i want to train hard and cant. Ah well im sorta back to running now so i reckon the brace will help alot.

had a slipped disk in primary school..all i remember is somthing going then crying when chasing a ball..hurts like hell..rested for weeks then everything was all good

I have some disease in my spine which means that it has worn down badly and far to early for my age,I take Naproxen, and cocodamol, from the doctors, and I have a brace that I wear when its bad,I have had physio, ten's, and a few other treatments, but dont take the operation if you get offered that as what will happen is , The next disc up the spine will collapse, leaving you with the same problem again. This will happen every time up untill the point that you wont be able to move freely at all,and after a while you learn to live with the pain, unfortunitly

I cannot take the operation as it would be the end of my job plus physios have said that I will not need an op :)

I've not slipped a disk as such, like taz I have what they describe as multi level disk degradation. I have effectively worn out the l3 l4 and l5 disks to the point they no longer do there job properly. I was diagnosed with this 8 year's ago when I was 30 but have had back problems since being a teenager.

I have pain every day of my life and for a long time got very depressed, had to have that medicated as well.

Eventually managed to accept things as they are, particularly after watching some family members my own age fight cancer, you realise you don't have it that bad.

Anyway, for me I see a chiropractor once a month who helps keep me moving( he was recommended by the surgeon who told me they couldn't operate on my back). I take 30/500 mg co codamol tablets, 8 a day. If you use these don't worry so much about the codeine its taking to much paracetamol which will kill you. A recent study showed even short term overdosing, ie an extra tablet or two w day for a few weeks can lead to long term problems. If it gets really bad I also have tramadol, which is really good but I can't function when I take it.

For me its just about trying to get on and do the things you enjoy, unfortunately I had to stop playing badminton and doing aikido but I can still get out and swing a golf club when its not too bad.

Hope this rambling post helps.

Martin.
