Shell Optimax Petrol & Lubricants

I work in engine lubricants for Shell so I know that Shell's top-tier oils are as good or better than any other oils out there - Castrol's Magnatec adverts are very good but Shell oils have the smae properties and we have compared the two and Shell Helix Ultra is better. Shell is a very conservative company, and is not very good at blowing it's own trumpet or creating persuasive adverts.

Also - Optimax petrol could potentially pay for itself by giving you extra mpg and greater power. Did you know that standard petrol in Japan is superior to even our Super (98 RON) petrols. Standard there is 100 RON ! Our standard is 95 RON. The quality of the petrol you use also affects engine longevity and condition like the lubricant does. I think US petrol is also better than ours. If you haven't tried it, YOU WILL FEEL MORE POWER USING OPTIMAX.

tell me about it m8,i wouldnt use out else(optimax baby )

as for oil whats better than castrol rs 10-60 for an engine 13k miles on it?

thanks jay

only problem is finding a ****ing Shell garage.

EG went from Heathrow to Tamworth today - no Shell. Orange light started at NEC junction on M42. Ducked into centre of Birmingham looking for Optimax, traffic jam at city centre, came back out and headed for Tamworth courtesy of BP 97 super plus.

Petrol stations went (from memory) Texaco Total BP Jet Esso, Esso (or Texaco - something red). Got paranoid and went back out!

Oh, and your additives made Kawasaki carbs freeze (until they redesigned).

Oh, and they cocked up my Shell Points card.

Of course, all this is absolutely your personal fault unless you join the forum. Oh look, you have lol biggrin.gif

Yes its finding a Shell is the problem then one with Optimax. There are 2 close to me in Wigan, one has had it for nearly a year. The othe has only just got it.

And when I get there, there is always some woman using the pump. There are 8 unleaded pumps and 1 optimax. Why when I go there there is only ever 1 person there, and they are using the optimax pump to put unleaded in. mad.gif wink.gif

Stuart

I work for Total and I use optimax too, quite embarrasing when i have to the garage down the road from mine (my main competitor) to fill up!

Ok Nelson mate...group buy on petrol then?

Whats your discount biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Paul

I must be lucky! I have 2 Optimax stations in Burton on Trent near where I live and also 2 more on the A50 south of Derby on my way to work in Leicester. Way cool - or would be if I was driving a 300 to work rather than the f*****g loan micra!

I drive 30 miles each way to work and go past dozens of petrol stations. The only Shell one does not sell Optimax. There used to be loads of Shell stations. I have now found one a detour away.

The petrol is great.

I'm lucky to have 2 Shell stations half a mile from my house.

I wouldn't use anything else and can turn the boost up much higher on Optimax than standard or super.

I need to try a tank of Optimax and a couple of bottles of octane booster biggrin.gif

I am more chuffed than you can believe! Few weeks ago the local tinpot Dukes of Hazard garages didn't even do Super including Tesco in Holyhead! FFS!

But the tiny little Shell garage 2 miles up the road from me has just started selling Optimaximus Petroleus Fasticus Economicus at 79.9 per litre.

So my baby is now gonna get the good stuff from now on and gonna plan my journeys using Autoroute from hombase alpha to nearest Shell garage at my intended destination...PUKKA! biggrin.gif

I have this on good authority - Optimax is not just another Super Unleaded. It's more than just a high(98/99) RON petrol. The base fuel(it contaisn additives like Lubricating oil) is specially sythesised at Stanlow refinery in the Northwest (near Chester) and it took a lot of work to set up the refining process to create it. The reason it is not available at every Shell station is due to logistics - difficult to delivery it in sufficient quantities. BUT APPARENTLY, GOOD NEWS, IT WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE AT ALL SHELL SERVICE STATIONS !!

Hi Nelson,

So you've sold me on the petrol already because it is the highest octane fuel readily available in the UK.

But you haven't explained why your oils are better, are they better than Mobil 1 15-50 or Castrol 10-60?

Mark

From what I've been told (and I believe everything people tell me!!) Shell oils are generally? superior to Castrol oils. However, there is probably not much difference between Shell Helix Ultra and Mobil 1 for instance. Shell oils have antioxidants (primary and secondary), detergents, dispersants, friction modifiers, anti-wear additives, pour point depressants, viscosity modifiers.

Ordinary Shell petrol is not much different from Esso, BP/Mobil but much better than supermarket petrol, Texaco, Elf, Total, Jet etc.

been reading these posts last few days, very interesting,i'had probs with detting since got car, only when really opening it up, so since Johns dissaster at the dyno test(i was there and is was not the sort of thing i would like to go thru,f###### frightnin)i have been treading lightly so to speak, cant get Optimax around this way for miles,so last 2 days have been using super unleaded from esso garage,(whats the ron on this!!)since then its not done it,so a bit relieved now, wish i could use shell ,just to try it!TonyC

99% of the time I use bog standard unleaded from either Total or Tesco's, whatever's nearest. Never had any probs - did use Optimax for the dyno day though. However, I know that my chip is setup for that regular unleaded, so I'm not too bothered.

Mines a jap import(2000)and was modified prior to import so could be why i get detting more using normal unlead,?

I think most SUPER's are 98 RON (Research Octane Number)- it relates to the level of C8 compounds or something like that, ie. the higher the better - there's more of the molecules which combust efficiently to those that don't. I suspect that most SUPER's also contain additives - useful because all engine oil experiences a small amount of fuel dilution. But as I've said Optimax is not just another SUPER and is made by a special process.

I know nothing about pertol ,i work on plant machinery(dirty diesel),but i've been to oil refineries(to work on plant machines),and seen all the main brand petrol tankers filling out of the same..err..tanker!!so how can they be different??don't want a full scale war,I'd just know what i've seen?

IT should read petrol but it late and i cannot spell!!

Octane levels (RON)

This is based on Total fuel but i believe it is the same for all oil companies;

Standard unleaded 95

super unleaded 98

Old LEADED 4 star 99

New $ star L.R.P (lead replacement petrol) 98

Not that the last two matter as us Z drivers cant use em anyway!

All main petrol suppliers may use the same base fuel for normal petrol, but they put different additive treat rates into the petrol[may be the same for all main brands but not for supermarket/cheap ones etc.].

I said that Shell petrol(not Optimax) was probably as good as BP/Esso etc. but better than supermarket/cheapos. Optimax is superior petrol to any out there (see above).

Yes 4 star is RON98.

One of AY3388 friends has to run Super in his Lancia, and during the Petrol shortage he phoned Shell and asked where the nearest Super avaliable pertol is. They told him to put Leaded. Super Unleaded is just slightly treated Leaded. confused.gif

Stuart

You can be sure of Shell !

LRP was treated super, apparently. An additive put into the super made it into LRP, and they said *would be just as good* as super, if he put LRP in.

Not quite the right story but hey! the means makes no odds, its the result that counts. hehe biggrin.gif

btw. this was before the time of the all conquering Optimax, which I love smile.gif

[This message has been edited by Ay3388 (edited 01-07-2002).]

You'll struggle to put LRP in a Z anyway the filler hole should be too small, this is to prevent people accidently putting 4 star in cars with catalysts.

Err I've seen my local Safeways and Tescos being filled by Esso / Mobil Tankers.
