As soon as I have reached my target speed of 180mph (gps) in this car I have to move on to faster things.

The challenge is to hit 200mph before I'm 30. I got just under 4 years left. Set a bet with my mate years and years ago. First one to hit 200mph in their own car before they're 30.

Some things I've read in forums have made me wonder though....

Is the Zed capable of the fabled 200mph mark with a little work...?

Take a trip to scotland with easyjet and you'll smash that record in the first 10 minutes after takeoff !!:whistling:

They will drop you off in Ireland though

have a look at the z32 that holds the land speed record of 260ish(something like that) all the spec is there...... bonneville 1992 i think??

a tad more than 'a little work' involved there though if I remember correctly

I seem to remember a web site that calculated how much power you need to hit 200 mph - it was just less than 500 bhp IIRC? Main problem will be gearing.. Manual box would require 8000+ revs or something daft, but the VG30 isn't going to be producing much power at those revs (if it doesn't go bang first). Similar story with the Auto box, though I believe Yowser quoted about 190mph at 7200rpm in another post??

Power isn't really the problem, you can get 500bhp quite cheaply as long as you're not bothered about longevity. It's finding a gearbox that'll pull 200 that'll be the real problem. Maybe a 6 speed box from another car would do it, but it'll be a ball-ache to do it, whatever you go for.

If you want to hit 200 mph, buy a bike and and make sure you video it, so once they've scraped your remains off the side of a bridge somewhere, you still have evidence of that magical 200mph!!

if you want help give us a shout bud, im not the most experinced zed worker but im getting there and always happy to help. local spirt and all

That was the Jun zed, iirc wasnt that running on a stock gear box with a longer final drive?

In sort no a zed will not do 200mph. gear box is limited to 198mph iirc but the auto could reach 202mph as it has longer gears. cost a few quid to get there aswell.

Think you would be best with a supra or a R32 for a top end run.

Top end speed is largely determined by the final drive ratio.

Most 6 speed boxes will have 5th gear as a 1:1 drive & 6th as an overdrive - just with an additional gear up to 5th for closer ratios.

Some do have 2 overdrive gears but mainly its the final drive that will determine this.

Either way, I got 4 years to manage it. I was looking at a TVR Cerbera 450 Lightweight. Book top speed of 192mph+ standard. Certainly cheaper than anything else capable of such speeds.

It depends on where you are going to do it also.

If you are going to do it safely, then it will have to be on a runway such as RAF Marham event, but you ONLY get about one and a half mile before you have to brake for the turn so to make 200mph on that will need a bit of power.

I think I manage only 175 mph last time before I jump on the brake, but that was only with 600bhp or so.

Remember that you have to take into account of aerodynamic high speed will cause instability, downforce will cause drag.

The Z32 is probably a good base, but I would say you will need at least 800 bhp (maybe more) to do it in a safe place in the UK.

You can have a lot less power if you have access to the VW Test Track in Germany (6 miles straight) or go to the Autobahn but that is still a little dangerous as it is public road, but at least it is legal.

havent most autobahns now been restricted in loose terms to 155mph but are considered unlimited because most people wont ever get to that speed. i beleiev you can still be cahrged with dangerous driving if they deem it tooooo fast for the conditions etc etc. isle of man is the same there is no speed limit but you can be cahrged for furious driving.

Apparently....

"You would need almost exactly 600 flywheel hp in order to attain 200mph in a 300zx (679 flywheel hp in order to reach 209...) along with a significantly lower ratio differential than what is offered in the TT as well as some very carefully chosen tires." - Some guy posting on nicoclub.com

And apparently...

"With stock sized tires you could put in the Q45 3.538 differential and run the engine to 7,250 RPM for exactly 200 mph. If you keep the stock TT 3.692 differential and run the engine up to 7,550 RPM you would hit 200 MPH. Depending on how your engine is tuned, I would aim for a higher limit than 200 so that when you actually get to 200 you're in a decent power band. It may still be able to pull you up to that at redline but, like I said, just depends on how your engine is tuned. With that engine you have, it probably wouldn't be a problem having the total limit closer to 200 (running it close to its redline).

If the engine is setup for a limit of 7000-ish RPM you'll probably want to go to the 3.538 differential and get some slightly taller tires.

Just thought of another potential option. The Armada is available with a 3.36 and 2.94 differential. The 3.36 would definitely get you past 200 mph with stock sized tires and a 7,000 RPM redline. As far as actually using that diff... you could probably put the ring and pinion in a TTZ case as they're both R230's." - Some other guy posting on nicoclub.com

But reality is you'll make no more than 56mph....as that's what the AA lorry is restricted to!

You could always help yourself out by dropping a Jun VG in there (3.2ltr) I believe and a bargain at only £25k

TVRs are a lot like kit cars except they come built and you slowly take them apart.

They are damn gorgeous though and I would certainly put all the time and effort into maintaining one given the chance.

Now that is true, they are stunning to look at and pull like a futher mucker' but they're just so fragile

We travelled up to the midlands a few years ago to test drive a Noble and the guy who owned the place also had a few TVR's up for sale. My wife really like the Cerberra, it was stunning in a candy apple red flip paint, but was also considered to be the 'practical' option due to the number of seats and it's funky doors. It was a lot quicker than the Noble but surprisingly less than half the price

We didn't buy the Noble in the end because the TVR was so much more car for the money, but we didn't buy the TVR either as a quick google highlighted some real running issues

but yeah, I agree TVR have/had some genuine artistic design genious

I've already done all my homework on the Cerberas and TVRs in general and I'm still way off owning one. Still want one more than anything.

Alot of the cerberas have had the troubles sorted out but these ones cost mega bucks but soooo worth it.

I had a guy in a petrol station want to swap his yellow one with my zed. I said no and he gave me his card and said if you ever change your mind just call. seeing the prices going slowly up i wish i did :(

I've heard TVR are making a comeback which is going to make the prices of them go up again but at least insurance should come down a little on them.
