ok its decission time ive got my uk auto tt and i love it but ever since i was about 12 ive wanted an r33 gtr but now theres a problem i cant decide wether to keep the zed and modify it to around the 400 mark or sell up and buy a gtr.

personaly a cant stand the gtrs interior and i love the zed's one its a million times better in every way

power wise i know the gtrs easyer to tune to high power but a 400hp wouldnt exactly be a slouch

gtr has the obv benefit of awd so its gonna be a more stable car im not planning on doing any track days in either car but awd would be nice on wet roads etc

finaly i do tend to go on long mway drives as my mums in cornwall and my bro lives in huddersfield and as ive never done one in a gtr i dont know for sure but id guess the zed would be more comfey

i rekon to get the zed to 400hp id need the manual conversion, injectors, a good map, and maybe stronger turbo internals and a few other bits and bobs plus by the time jeffs fixed other things that no doubt will turn up i rekon itll cost about 3k so it would be cheaper than a gtr

any thoughts or advise would be great and i know its a bit foolish posting this on a zed forum but im pretty sire u guys can be fairly unbiased!!! lol

cheers nick

LOL - I had the same thoughts a couple of years back.

My zed had been off the road with corrosion to the rear sills - needed a few other bits sorting & had sat outside my work for about 18 months as I didnt know what to do with her - the poor old girl look pretty sad :crying: (see my rebuild thread LOL!)

I have always fancied a GTR as they are pretty awesome machines!

However - I personally think the Zed has a much better look - the GTR's are agressive looking where the Z32 just looks sleek & sporty.

I was almost at the point of breaking her but in the end I just couldnt do it & ended up spending a fortune on restoration work, a full respray as well as a few more mods!! :w00t:

Its a personal decision & only one you can really make - once it was back on the road I knew I made the right (probably not financially LOL) decision! :balloon:

oh dont get me wrong i love the zed to bits she looks greats goes well and is comfey on a long trip but they seem fragile and expensive to fix ( mainly because most mechanics wont go near them )

To be honest I have had mine 10 years & it has only ever let me down twice - PTU failed when I first got it & replaced with a series 2 & a few years back the water pump went.

Apart from that it has been very reliable (know I shouldnt be saying this!)

I am in the trade & do all my own work so not a problem there!

Where in Kent are you BTW?

It can stay auto and still do 400bhp :-)

really? how do u map the thing? mines uk so no power hold button

had a nice 95 na zed and i sold it to buy a family car well the family car lasted 1 month, even though it was a 2.6 sri vectra b and it was a 2001 car it was quickly replaced with my TT,there is just something special about the zed that you will miss if you sell it,

Bite the bullet and get yourself a tidy R32 or R33 GTR mate

then if it doesn't do it for you after a few months you could sell it and buy yourself 12 x Z32's (or just the one very good example)

simples

I've got both mate, and I would never sell the gtr!! you can tweek the gtr and spend less then £500 to get to 400bhp where the zed would expect a lot more, I also hated the gtr interior but had it all done up for £1000 now its a lot more comfortable!!

Also the torque range on a straight six compare to a v6 is amazing and I would definately say that the gtr is a lot more reliable than the zed by far aswell !!!!!!

On the whole due to the pedigree of both cars I could never sell em no matter what GUD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sounds like a pretty tasty garage you have there matey what would you say is more comfortable on a cruise? as id say thats the tipping point for me tbh, id love the gtr but im worried that on a 5 hour run the exhaust would send me mental and the ride would break my spine?

I drove my GTR 200 miles home when i bought it and was fine.

Mine should be 400bhp now and it a bit of a beast.

Different car to the zed, i prefer the GTR, but its much more money.

Many Autos run some decent power and seen then run down the strip too.

In the US they seem do really well.

The box on a zed in comparison to many other cars is very strong indeed, the only disadvantage is age and how well it's been or not been looked after previously!

Not understanding why it makes a difference, you modify the engine in the exact same way as you would a manual, you run various aftermarket chips as you would a manual and if it warrants live mapping, erm go to a man/garage who maps cars.

You don't think garages and peeps only tune and map manual cars do you??

To be honest mate, they both as bad as each other on a long drive!! just had my gtr tuned and mapped again it made 630 bhp atw and sounds like a fighter jet so really cant comment on long journeys!!

what I can suggest tho is what am doing at the momment putting a gtr engine in a zed my mate as just completed the project and has best of both worlds!!!!!!

Being a Z32 forum, we might be a trifle biased - but personally I do not like the GTR at all......

...unless it's the R35 or at the very least an R34. The others are too plain and ordinary in appearance for my liking. Sure I respect the R32 and R33 GTR for the machines they are - but look at them......:sleep1:

Might as well stick a Cossie engine in an old Cortina........

The Z32 has timeless looks and stands out as something interesting in today's world of boring cars. Hence the reason I have remained a 300zx owner since 2003 - sure I too have a modern, fast daily driver. But for exclusivity and the sheer hell of driving something different from the norm, and a bit special, I love the 300zx.....!!!

Richard:rockon:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I agree with Richard 100% The R32 and R33 are looking really dated imo. where as a zed with a few little tweeks and look sweet. and there rare aswell :)

I dont like the R35 either but i LOVE the nismo R34

Have to agree with you mate, on looks alone there's no comparison between a z32 and r33. The older skylines look very dated now.

The Z32 is just about the most boring, plain, ugly and un-eventful car that you could ever drive....it's a 20 year old Datsun that's prone to rust, it costs a fortune to run and maintain and the targas have the waterproof properties of a used T bag.

There's minimal decent body mods available for them and if you want to build something special you have to import parts from....................

I'm only messing, you gotta' love the zed, it's special (and not in a Forrest Gump sort of way!)

I friggin' love my Datsun :thumbup1:
