Hi,my son is 17 in march and wants to get a Corsa 1.0,he had a look on Compare the Market and best quote was 6000.00 TPFT im sure we must be able to get this down massively, just wondering if any of you had any advice which is the best way to go.

Try Adrian Flux, for some reason they like there cars to be modified so say its got some 15" alloys on it.

They always charge more for std car.

My 1st car was a fiat uno 45 that was 8 years ago and that was about £1200ish tpft and the car was only worth £300 and ive been paying around £1000 tpft ever since :(

More for a standard car?

I'm packinge my bags, i'll bring the weather.

Yeah mad isnt it. They specialise in modded cars only, There still the only company that will insure my zed with the mods and my age :(

Been with them now for about 5 years.

Cheers Car Mad, I have heard ther are schemes now where they can go on your policy but they can still accumulate there ncb or multi car policies????The wife says there has been a massive hike in insurance for youngsters.I wonder it might be cheaper to get him a zed tt on a classic car policy lol.

Yeah i believe so but i dont know where? Dad tryied to get me on his old mk3 supra and his policy went flying up so he said im on my own :lol:

I wouldnt trust becky in my zed let alone a 17 year old lad showing off to his mates doing donuts in tescos lol!!!

6000.00 TPFT

Get Fully Comp quotes...again it makes no sense, but everytime I get a quote its cheaper for that than TPFT.

Another tip is to go with someone like Admiral (or any of their sister companies like Bell and Elephant) as they offer 10 month policies instead of 12, obviously its cheaper because you are paying for 2 months less, plus it gives you a full years no claims bonus 2 months sooner so you get renew with a discounted price after 10 months with them or any other company.

Get rid of the corsa itschav label wont help. You want something irregular and not "cool" for cheap insurance or a van, kas are cheap to insure but fold like card

Yup I was quoted 2k for a landy im nearly 26 changed it to full comp 600

I'm registered on both my kids insurance as a 45 year old accountant, one is 20 with a 1.5 diesel corsa that came down from £1450 to £720 and the other 21 with a C2 VTS that costs £450 but she does have 2 years no claims though. Also I found the autotrader search engine is a little cheaper than the others. PS my nephew runs a 300zx na and he is covered tpft for £680 at 24 years with 2 years no claims, good luck.

Always check comprehensive quotes. They are very often cheaper than tpft for some reason.

Add mum or dad as a named driver this usually lowers the cost considerably.

When my lads were younger Endsleigh was a good insurer they specialised in young drivers/students. I think Admiral now add young drivers to their multicar policies (may be worth a phone call rather than computer quote) but make sure it's worth your while changing.

On top of the above get him to take the Pass Plus Test most insurers give a discount for that (I think his driving instructor can carry out this test).

I just been through the same jaw dropping insurance quotes for my 18 year old, I went down the co-op route and at £850 per year is by far cheaper than any other quote but there is a draw back on your sons point of view. As part of the policy the co-op will fit a smart box to the car which monitors speed, braking, cornering and night driving which will reflect on your policy price if he drive like most teenager the policy price may go up but if he is sensible the policy price will come down.

It gave me piece of mind that after he is out of sight he contines to drive safely as I can go online as see how his driving is.

If you need any further information just drop us a line.

My son is driving a 1.0 corsa which has an inherent problem with the timing chain as it wears the car sound like a diesel (rattle) I didn't notice on the test drive as it only started after about 30 mins of driving but it is now pretty much on start up. you apparently need a special vauxhall tool to carry out the repair (£400). Just keep your ears open. other than that the car has been great.

just avoid the common cars driven by teenage lads i wouldnt go near corsas or clios my betting is that quite a few have been wrapped up by teenagers in the past hence the frankly outragous price, how about a starlet or dare i say smart car a freind of mine recently passed his test and bagged an 10 plate i10 for just over 3 grand, cheap tax/insurance/fuel/ nice looking/ new so very safe plus its still under warrenty for 4years!!

^^^^^ This

Go for something slightly away from the norm. Also putting a parent on the policy as an additional driver often brings the price down.

My brothers misses just passed her test and had 1.2 corsa which was 2000 a yr,

It started playing up so she looked at a 1.6 vectra phoned the insurance company and she couldnt believe it when her insurance dropped to 1500 a year.

So thats whats she is driving now,

Seems the corsa was more expensive because its classed has a 1st time driver car.

clio 1.4 rt was one of the cheapest car's for shell to insure as her first motor (was an s reg)

one thing to remember is that if you put him on your policy is that some wont insure him to commute to work and back

try elephant.co.uk, make him the policy holder but add you and your wife as named driver's bring's it down a bit

Thanks Stella. If i add my wife as a named driver they might double it lol.Interesting that a few have said stay away from some of the typical first cars corsa's etc.I will get him back on compare t m and make some comparisons perhaps focus or Astra that will be interesting.

Put some old people on his policy ie you and his grandad. Brings it down loads, try it it works.

Christ i remember when i 18 I had a 1.8i gls mk2 cavalier and i was only paying 1100 for that I traded that in against a vw polo G40(supercharged) and i was only paying 900 on that ,mind you that was nearly 20 years ago, and Im only paying 390 fully comp on the zed now.the young uns have got it hard these days
