When choosing a clutch you need to ensure your covering the performance requirements, your driving style and cost of course, however cost can sometime get in the way of making clear decisions, information, research and recommendations are the way forward.

We all like a bargain but you need to be careful that any clutch you buy is matched so that all of the components work together as one unit.

Below are the results of a mismatched clutch, removed today in the workshop from a zed with little in the way of drive when under power but amazingly what appeared to be complete drive at lower speeds.

The 4 puck clutch plate has very hard ceramic splinter pads that accordingly should hold more than enough ftlb of torque for this zed BUT the flywheel and cover plate are totally standard, the result is that the ceramic pads have literally eaten into both the flywheel and the cover! the plate pads are not far off new thickness but do have some damage from the heat of the metal grinding thats been taking place.

No alterative now, this zed now needs a new flywheel and a matched clutch unit as well as a clean up in the bell housing that looks like an engineering factory waste bin!

Be careful as some units sold on auction sites seem to be NOT matched, the price will often look attractive but can represent bad value.

Yikes that's harsh...

Personally wouldn't reccommend a 4 puck anyways, usually a 6 puck for some decent driveability.

So our own designed clutch prior to fitting, and the flywheel fitted with completion tomorrow ready for collection should see this zed owner very happy.
