When idling at running temperature the car pumps out quite a bit of kinda bluey smoke from both sides. This doesnt happen when cold. Also when u rev it, a big puff of smoke comes out at about 4500rpm.

The car is totally stock with 60,000miles on the clock.

What do you reckon? Is it serious?

doesnt look like anything on the chart. there is a noise on boost. It could be the turbo, could it be caused by a boost leak somewhere too? Will see what happens after putting some thicker oil in and replacing air/fuel filters. Hopefully it will go away.

Clarkey, before you go worring I have seen this trend for tickover smoking on thge increase almost all the cars I deal with that have the problem are OVERFILLED with engine oil.

The comination of mileage on excess oil seems to lead to the breather system sucking heavy oil laden air in through the intake and out the exhaust.

When checking the oil level DO NOT use the H mark as a full indicator, about 1/3 down between the H and the L is about right, also use a 10w 40 or 15w 40 semi synth only.

Hope that helps.

I just had a look at the dipstick, if thats what you can call it. Lol!

How are you supposed to read it? The engine has been off since yesterday, so im presuming the oil will be at the bottom, is this when you are supposed to read it, or run the engine or what. Cos it didnt make sense, the oil level was off the top of the little indicator thing onto the cable...i think!

Mmm sounds over full!

There should be a lower level and upper level on the dipstick, the level should always be between these two marks. Park the car as flat as possible, and leave for as long as possible, some people prefer to have the oil up to temperature then check after leaving the car parked flat for 20 mins or so, doesnt really matter. Anyways, id keep it towards the maximum level, and try not to overfill too much, a little and you're ok, a lot and it'll block oilways and blow oil seals. needless to say, dont let it fall below minimum.

You should be checking every week (two weeks max) to make sure a oil leak hasnt developed and you havent lost a drastic amount.

It is ok if you do have to put a little oil in every so many weeks, this is simply oil consumption, not so you would notice by smoke, and is normal for older engines or or indeed most high performance engines to use a little oil.

If it is overfilled then its safer to drain oil to the required level, or simply do an oil change and dont overfill again. Dont run if its a lot over the maximum mark.

yeah i think it is over full. I think the first reading i did was way off, the oil was about 3" up the cable!!! I ran the engine for a few mins then took another reading, and it was just over the full mark. Its parked on pretty even ground, slight slope, i cant park it on the road though no tax frown.gif

Its lower just after running the engine cos all the oil paths etc have filled with oil, and oil is still around the engine, needs to be settled, and please dont run engine too much, you can do damage.

Best bet, is to drain out say a litre or so, and check oil. See how far its gone down, and then you know exactly how much to drain out, then check again. then start engine, idle it for a couple of minutes, and let it settle, check and top up / drain to just slightly below max.

oh right, if thats the case the damage has been done its done thousands of miles like it

Eek, drain it out and see how it goes, it can create too much pressure too, and blow the oil seals.

You may have been lucky though. Just get it out there as soon as you can, i wouldnt recommend starting it again, till youve done that.

It will smoke when you've over filled it, cos the oil has to go somewhere. Hopefully you will be ok!

the oil pressure guge has never read high, usually sits just over the 4 mark. But then we all know how crap the stock oil pressure guage is.

hmmmmm

lovely black engine oil running down your arm and into your sleeve as you try franticly to get the drain plug back in before you have an oil slick the size of loch ness on the garage floor.

Ive been there biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Seriously, get that smoking exhaust done first. Make sure that the car is running well be for you mod it. For starters the mod then may not be running at its full potential and may even do more damage than good with the problems already there.
