Squeaky / creaky noise from front passenger side suspension

I can hear it when I'm driving at low speed. A sort of fluttery, squeaky, creaky noise when the car goes over a bump or any uneven surface. It's coming from near the front passenger side wheel. If I push down on the arch I can hear the same noise a bit.

 

I guess it's a bush or a bearing or something in the linakge? Is there a common problem I should check for? I guess the first thing is to take the wheel off and have a look?

check the lower arm where the two bolts for the tension rod fit. I've seen a few rust around there causing a bad creak, scary stuff if you leave it!

I had this same problem with squeeky noises coming from the front, having owned a Primera I immediately thought it was the upper control arms as that's a common problem on those.

It turned out the problem was the hood, those rubber stoppers made squeeky noises when the hood was down. Put a dab of vaselin on them and the problem was solved.

Just a tip before you go out and buy expensive parts :)

I whipped the wheel off this morning. No sign of any corrosion as pictured (thank god!).

 

I moved the hub up and down a bit and the noise seemed to be coming from the top of the shock area. I squirted a bit of oil on there from the top and it seems to have cured it.

 

I have noticed there are two nuts on the very top of each shock. They're not tightened right down, they're still 1-2cm from being right the way down. Is that right? It does sound right. But someone competent fittedd the shocks (they're aftermarket ones) and it's gone through two Mots like that so maybe it's meant t be like that?

How far should they be tightened? I'm guessing all the way down so they're touching the washer below them?

Also what's the best way to stop the inner (threaded) part of the shock turning as I tighten the nuts down?

Firstly use two spanners to loosen them apart from each other they should wind down independently freely as there not nylocks, then nip up bottom nut then use the two spanners to tighten them together again trying not to loosen the bottom one, the threaded part should have flats on to put a small spanner on to support it,

You can actually see from your pics the thread has flat sides on it where a spanner will fit

 

I wasn't sure if those flats where where someone had grabbed it with molegrips or something.

I would be dropping that shock down to check why a gap suddenly appeared!!

Good point and doesn't take long to check either ;-)

Undo two top nuts either side of the shock central thread, Undo shock at the bottom, put bar in lower arm and lever down to take any pressure off the shock, then slide shock bottom off pin. Lower and remove

Thanks lads, will have a go at this today. Fingers crossed I don't bodge it up and end up having to get it traillered to a garage!
