Twin oil coolers...at what stage is it appropriate?

As title really

If I remember correctly 'Monster' used to run a twin oil cooler setup on his 600bhp track zed, but at what stage would running a twin oil cooler setup be appropriate?

Assuming a road going car that's driven hard at several track days per year

muchas gracias, por favor

Can't see the point really,I think I would just go for a bigger single set up.

Depends on the size of the oil cooler, a 35 row 235mm wide cooler would be sufficient for heavy track days, but location will be an issue. If you have a fmic, then smoc's is an option. I have an Intercal 19 row fmoc, and is fine with heavy/spirited driving on track and road. Done Nurburgring and Snetterton.

Bhp values for my 300..... Not sure, maybe 400-450fwhp (even more hopefully), take a look at my ride spec.

Cheere mate

yeah I believe 'monster' had two fitted where the smic's used to be due to the fmic that was fitted

I'm going to switch front bumpers on the shortie' and was thinking of running the Arc oil cooler along the top of the greddy fmic and was considering fitting an additional larger Calsonic in the stock oil cooler position, ready for when I fit the new engine. I just figure that I should make allowances for a second cooler early on, should it be required later on down the line

That would be a good set up matey.......

Just make sure you have a decent thermo sandwich plate

I was thinking of using the Greddy/Grex kit, would that be suitable?

  • Author

Certainly does mate, although the import model oil cooler is a lot smaller than the UK model

Hi mate, sorry to hijack the thread but where can I get one of these coolers from?

Hello bud, I picked the Calsonic oil cooler up off a guy on Driftworks, he thought that it came off a Skyline though I'm not sure if it's stock on a GTR? The Arc oil cooler is aftermarket and off a Skyline BNR34 GTR.

Calsonic are manufactures of Rads and coolers for many cars as standard fitment. Never known them to do aftermarket, however i guess it is possible, just not usual.

smithy

Mine has got a Mocal oilcooler for the engine and the standard oilcooler has been used for the autobox cooler

im gonna be running a larger mocal oil cooler with my build jap and haven't considered running anymore as I think it will suffice and you know what my spec is jap. Of course as I will have all the sensors I will find out if it is enough but the mocal one is bigger than your arc one there

Here's a question for you???

If I wanted to run just one of these coolers for now and didn't want to use the sandwich plate, would I be able to just snip off the ends of the braided hoses and jubilee clip onto the stock oil pipes (where the stock oil hoses slip over the metal oil pipes)?

The only possible issue that I can see is that the hoses are sized to fit what I believe are pretty large ID hoses (the connector is just shy of 50mm ID) so whatever that is in AN fitment?

Centre light panel to give an indication of cooler size:

I would ditch them both and get a decent size 19row oil cooler instead.

The charged face size on them is smaller than the stock UK cooler.

not really an option unfortunately, I sold my 19 row HEL last year as it didn't fit in with my re-location plan

at least with these I've got the option of running it (the ARC) above the fmic in a similar manner to this R34 GTR (though my ARC cooler is about 1/3 larger than this one)

I figure it would get much cooler air if located here than if it was behind the fmic

the idea of having a second (calsonic) cooler located in the stock location was to increase cooling again on fairly long track sessions (if required???). Alternately, if not used as a secondary oil cooler then maybe it could be used as an upgraded PAS cooler instead, if that makes sense?

Totally agree matey.........

If you locate it as in the pic of the R34, then you will have no issues.... in my opinion.

apologies for hi jacking the thread but i need to ask a question that has bothered me for some time, with the fitting of extra engine oil coolers and or auto box fluid coolers the result effect is that the oil temp drops, but how do you then know the oils and fluids are up to the correct working temps, is it not possible that by cooling too much you actually do more harm than good ?????

That skyline is a monster

Much nicer than the new GTR

It's an absolute stunning example of an R34 GTR, and exactly what I was looking for back in 2007 (had I not been a complete prat and bought a zed and an FD instead because it was 'cheaper' :headvswal)......unfortunately the owner, Alex, overlooked the requirement for an on board fire extinguisher system!!!

by all accounts though, the car got off pretty lightly and wasn't too badly damaged (though still expensive no doubt)

That is a valid point and something I've discussed elsewhere, the general opinion is that the pro's outweigh the con's as there is minimal risk of engine damage, though a specific oil type was suggested (I'll try to find the old PM)

I'd be interested to get others views on this though
