Hi guys.

Just got a crappy car related phone call.

Ive had the zed almost 10 years now and have slowly made it how i want it. Over the last year ive had an engine built. Nice bit of power and a pile of shinyness (is that a word? :))

I recently had my original engine removed and stripped back the engine bay, After finally choosing a colour it went off to the bodyshop, ready to be smoothed and sprayed.

The plan was to have the bay done, fit the engine, then full respray.

So, back to the crappy phone call. The bodyshop lifted the carpet to remove the loom and found that the passenger side floor is rotten. I suspect ive maybe had a leaking heater matrix. Not only that but both sills are rotten and need replaced. They have been hiding behind my sideskirts so have gone unnoticed. Great!

Anyhoos, is it possible to get a hold of replacement sills? Otherwise the bodyshop will be making them by hand.

I've even considered sourcing a rolling shell but i dont think thats a great idea. (unless anyone has a '99 SWB with no engine :))

Any help with the sills greatly appreciated. In the meantime, i'm away to sulk

Big shame mate, there are a few threads on here from people bringing them back from some awful states. Alot of the time though its not worth the effort for what you can buy a strong solid shell for.

What is it were looking at? Is it a SWB 99 spec car? Or something, how to say it, a little easier to come by?

There are sill repair sections available but I think they are only the outer sill?? Some people have fabricated their own.

Hi mate i believe Mike at MJP in the traders section can provide replacement sill sections.

Mine is a 1991 SWB. It sounds silly, but other than the above the car is very good. The bodyshop has quoted £1500 to fabricate a new floor and sills and all associated work.

If i was to source a solid shell, it would have to be solid -and a SWB! I cant imagine i would find that, promptly, for much less than £1500. Considering uplift costs etc.

Then i have all the work to do to the bay, switch over all the suspension parts, interior etc...

I dont fancy that much - its hard enough trying to keep motivation for the car

Starts to get expensive when they start to rot and you can end up chasing your tail.

lol. Very apt username

i think it would have to be something like a '99 to tempt me to go for a new shell

There is a shorty shell available believe it is a slicktop. The guy was on the other site and on driftworks with it. Its said to be solid and alot less than £1500 if your interested i can try and find some contact details about it.

Thanks bud, yup i'll consider all options at the mo.

Unlike most, i like my targas though. Not sure i fancy a slicktop

I've got a rolling shell that had a front end impact on the passenger frame sitting out the back of the house that i was just about to scrap next week while i was off but the shell itself doesn't seem to have any rot. The only thing is the sill near the rear wheel on the passenger side has been dented but it's not rotten so could be easily flattened out again before welding back on.

I don't know if it's any help if you can cut out the floor/sill rather than fabricate it but it certainly sounds a heck of a lot cheaper than £1500 to try and make it from scratch?

It's on 4 wheels minus the brakes/doors/targas/interior but it's down to the bare shell so easy to cut out the bits you need quickly. I'd only want £150 for it if you can take it away then you can weigh the rest in and get the money back.

cheers Nick,

Is it a SWB?

It's a 1991 long wheel base on an h plate i believe?

EDIT: Rats, just read you're looking for a shortwheel base :( Sorry buddy

MJP do replacement sills for around £150. When I bought my car I had a bit of welding to be done, it was on the inner and outer sills on all 4 corners. Just be aware that the rot can go high up on the bodywork, mine was rotten well above the line along the lower part of the door!
