to say the radiator was blocked is an understatement, about 3 channels halfway up and 5 at the top were available to get the water through, what gave it away was what A2zed (member of the Aus300zx site) mentioned that the bottom hose will collapse on its self if there is flow restriction, which it did when i got it to start over heating earlier (yes i know inducing over heating for the purpose of testing lol)

So out came the old rad that sprang a leak, i was lucky that the leak was due to the clip system on the side that holds the oil coolers for the autobox, 2 had pride them selves off the casing, so i eased them back into position with a hammer and chisel, refitted everything. refilled the system checked for the rad leak which was now none existent, seems there is still a slight air pocket in there, but going to bleed it again tomorrow and im so glad i didn't throw the old rad out.

Temp stayed at 84 degrees, crept up to 88, been as high as 89, but when giving it a bit of boost and driving it above 50, it actually cools down to 82 degrees now, and i have hot air that doesnt fluctuate :) and when pulled up she settles to 84.

88 and 89 temp achieved when idling for a prolonged period with the heater off? so i still think there is a trapped air bubble in there somewhere so will re bleed the system tomorrow.

Will still need a new rad as i don't trust the one i put on (due to old leak), just did it to see if it was indeed a rad problem, got a bit worried when i stripped the old one down on one side and saw it looked clean as a whistle, until i stripped the other side out. couldn't even see through most of the cores.

will be keeping an eye on it for now though to make certain. have to admit though, its the coolest my engine has smelt in a while.

You wouldnt believe the size of that pile of crap in the photo, the photo makes it look small, also trapped in the channels that id removed before taking the photo were old bits of orange sealent used by nissan to seal the waterpump and water pipes to the block

....but feel for you re the thermostat problem; I hope you can get it sorted matey. That rad cap is on its way to you as we speak by the way.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

the stat is only there to get the engine hotter faster but seems that we are in the uk and its quite warm most of the year round

at its worst it will take longer to warm up but these engines get hot fast anyways

due to lack of air flow

just seems for the past 3 years all ive had is bad luck bud, almost getting the norm. ive had a few good spells but the bad ones certainly out weigh them

So, strip the engine back again tomorrow, im sure people living around me wonder why i bother with it, all they have seen me do is spend more time with it in bits than with it together lol

Where in Northamptonshire are you? Far from the M1?

wellingborough bud, 7 miles from the M1 off the northampton junction (J15)

chuffed and gutted mate..

With the thermostat out. you choke will be on for ages while you wait for the engine to warm up. but atleast you will be able to get around.

With the rad like that i would also give the full engine a flush! I did with mine and loads of gunk came out, its been nice and clean now for 4 years :)

you would be supprised how many times the bloody things had a flush, the water still looks rusty colored.

I'll pick you up if you're keen on going, no problem at all. PM me your number and address and we can sort out a time

you could do with useing a hose pipe to blast it clear. i also took out my matrix and did that. that was like your front rad and all blocked:wacko:

im limited to using loads of water containers, i live in a flat and can not get a hose pipe anywhere near the car.

not sure the local petrol station would apprecate me hogging there jet wash to flush me engine LOL:lol:

thats a shame :(

you can really build the pressure up with a pipe and blast it out. filling it up will not do anything. is there not an additive you could use?

tried some engine flush stuff, but was battling overheating at the time, so not sure it even had the desired effect.

A trick I was once told about by an old mechanic is to use washing powder (yes..the stuff for washing clothes) to flush the cooling system.apparently he used to swear by it and I have heard of a few other people using it, but have never tried it myself.

Is there caustic soda in it? I think thats the active ingredient in those rad flushes
