Hi guys,

Need your help again. Decided to put my set of UK clocks that I'd tarted up with some EL dials, put it back together and the speedo reads zero and the milometer stays at the same reading.

It used to have KM clocks with I'm led to believe a speed converter thing, not 100% sure on that as it wasn't accurate.

Driving it back to the UK tomorrow so could do with it lol. On a serious note is it required to be working for an MOT?

Cheers

nope - another example where something is required to be working by law but does not come into the MOT test! :detective:

the speedo just isnt a testable item - as a road test is not a part of the test (other than to brake test vehicles with LSD's for example) there would be no way to check it anyway

I didn't even think it was required by law tbh, thought the law just said you needed to be under the speed limit and that your speedo being wrong was not an excuse because they're something that can fail. Good to know.

Have you removed the speedo convertor?

If yes make sure the yellow/green stripe wire is reconnected to the plug as its the speed signal to the dash.

There is a possibility that the EL dial isnt flush and catching the rear of the needle, not allowing it to sweep and there fore no odometer either as they are linked.

Dry joints on the speedo board can also be a culprit.

Did the speedo work fine before you changed to UK clocks?

Hi Graham, cheers for that.

The speedo worked fine before so I'm confident it works. The el faces seem ok too as they sweep across fine with a finger. I haven't disconnected the converter as I don't know where it is or what it looks like lol.

There is a lot of hodges wiring on the car and the only thing different on this I can see is the audible chime thing for the lights and doors.

Cheers buddy

odometer

yup ;)

Where in the plug does the yellow/green wire go? Also I have no idea what the converter looks like, any hints and where in the dash it mint be.

Hi Rob, top left of the plug iirc, but if you havent removed a speedo convertor then chances are if you have one, its still connected. Its just a little black box normally mounted or left dangling at the rear of the clocks, so if you cant see it or dont appear to have extra wires attached to the rear of the speedo screws then you probably havent got a convertor at all.

Hard to say for sure without pics, but im sure if you drive back using satnav, at least you will see the speed till you get her back.

Ok mate, well there was no extra wires attached to the JDM clocks so I'm guessing my info was duff, again. Will try for a pic now but don't hold out much hope in the dark

Best pic i can do for now, will try again in the morning.

99% sure there's no black box stuffed down the back but if anyone can throw a light on whats going on that would be great.

Check the connections screws are all in place, the 4 in the lower red circle are obvious but the top single screw can easily be missed.

Cheers Jeff,

All four screws in the back of the dial, the screw in the smaller circle is in the other hole, tried it in the one in the picture but it wont go so didnt want to force it and break it. I will try again in the morning.

The screw in the top hole will be where it is in the pic for jap clocks (100k) and the UK clocks the screw is in the hole next to it (10K) Try banging the top of the clocks when going along, if you have any movement or intermittent needle movement, then likely a dry joint on the speedo board. Give the wires to the white plug a little tug to make sure they arent loose and check along the loom line for an obvious slice/break.

Ah ok so my screw are in the right place.

I'll put it back together in the morning and go round the block banging it repeatedly, I'll have to try and not get carried away and start venting my anger with it haha.

Whats the fix for a dry joint mate?

Speedo board out of the binnacle and you would normally get the dry joint around the R10 resistor area, but look at the tracks on the board for dull solder or missing solder.

Flow new solder basically will sort out the dry joints. Good bit of info here http://pexcom.com.au/z32cms/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.321

Hi Guys,

sorry to jump in on this thread, wheres the best place to buy the white connector plugs from?

I paid to have some one fit the clocks properly as I have no time and was desperate to get the new clocks fitted. The clocks I bought were from an older series and the plugs were different.

Therefore the sparky has cut them, chucked them and discarded.. Wires are soldered to the clocks.. I only know because the odometer doesnt work so thought Id have a quick check for a loose wire..

Gutted...

Teach me to wait and do it myself..

Cheers Guys..

Put it all back together and now half the lights don't work.

Turn the lights on and I get main beam, nothing else. Side and marker lights don't come on and nor does the rears or fog light.

Any ideas? I'm really pissed off with this thing now, I sodding hate *******ised electrics.

Full beam and no other lights is usually a blown fuse in kick panel or a blue relay in the engine bay mate.
