As the weather looked promising, I thought I would give the Zed a bit of a run up and down the by-pass a few times.

Couldn't help noticing a white VW hatch-back pick up my rear.:sneaky2:

Well I will soon loose him! or so I thought.:turned:

110mph came and went and I had only pulled a slight gap!:w00t: I did not plant my foot through the gears but never the less, I did still touch 6,500rpm through each gear.

Is my Zed tired or have I met my match?

I thought these cars were a bit more untouchable?

Mate of mine had an Evo 8, running about 300bhp.

He couldn't catch a mate in a mk5 golf Gti with a Dsg box. He claimed he missed a gear in the Evo, and the golf took off.

Some serious Golfs out there then?:sweatdrop:

Mmmmm, best leave them alone in future then.

And here's me thinking I was invincible. Damn it!:crying:

might of been a modded r32 golf. my mate has one its pretty quick standard zed does pull on it though. however they can be supercharged without too much effort. then its a new game i suppose.

Not knowing much about the Golf, would the R32 be the fastest standard Golf out there to date then?

Maybe I should of just of planted the throttle through the gears and not been as cautious.

Went to a clubcalibra event at billing in august and there was also a golf owners club event on and they had a mobile rolling road there and some of the r32's were hitting 400bhp with ease, and I should imagine they are a fair bit lighter than a zed

I heard that those 2.0gti engines are rated at about 210 hp, but really its more like 250! Also, some of the Mk VI golfs have 7 speed DSG gearboxes - even with less power, they'd still be able to keep you honest.

Only one thing for it, if you want to defend your honour, you'll have to treat the old girl to some tuning goodies (and start driving like a man, dammit)!

I've said this before, but seeing as it's particularly relevant. An old friend of mine took a TVR Cerbera (I think it was a cerbera) that was salvage, stripped it down to just the chassis and engine, repaired the chassis, then took a MkII Golf GTI, cut the shell off it's chassis, made it wider, made it longer, re-enforced it, then welded it to the Cerbera chassis and registered it with DVLA after going through all it's kit car checks. To the naked eye, looked like nothing more than a MkII Golf GTi, so yes, there are some SERIOUS golfs out there! :D

Too right Leo-r32gts:lol::lol:

If it makes you feel better I trounced a R32 Today!:punk:-He might of been a wimp tho' LOL!:ninja:

I can only hope it was the same one,

unlikely mind, but you never know?

Depends if he was heading to Nottingham LOL!

Opposite way I'm afraid, Heading away with tail between his legs.

Maybe he was up for revenge after you panned him when he saw me.

Damn Golf,

I must try harder next time.

Mind you, having said that, he could not quite keep up and at least he did not pass me.

On a serious note.... you say going to 6000 rpm but that is probably way past the max torque revs

So, if you can, get a power test and then you'll know what revs to shift at the get the zed pulling like a train and leaving everything behind....

Hi Quavey, It's a UK manual.:blushing:

Thanks TonyB, So as I understand, changing up at the peek of torque rather than at maximum revs would make better use of power?

For example, perhaps changing at 5,500rpm may well have actually been faster?:blushing:

I am looking forward to giving that a try, weather permitting.

If I was to get a power test, would it be possible to have a gear change indication light fitted to the dash?:cool2:

I usually change up between 5.5 and 6, I find the torque in the next gear far heavier than if I go over 6000. You can put a gear change indication light in easy enough, think you have to wire it in to the ECU to sense the revs and program it for what rev and in what gear etc.

The optimum shift point for maximum acceleration is the highest rpm, within the peak power curve, that when changing gear the rpm it drops to has more torque than at the previous shift point. This is aided by the VG relatively flat torque curve.

This can be quite easily mathematically modelled by graphing torque vs rpm or power vs speed in each gear, and It will be far closer to peak horsepower output or redline, than the peak torque rpm ! It may also vary between gears.

If its a turbo you should be able to feel when the power starts dropping of....

Cheers Hollowpoint,:thumbup1:

Looking forward to giving that a go.

Really like the idea of a gear change indication light, maybe a progressive series of LED's along the leading edge of the binnacle shroud?

Food for thought as to how this might be done?

That's why (when in good order) I prefer the Auto, Plant it and keep it there!LOL!-3rd is when it really comes into it's own!:sneaky2:

Thanks Yowser,

I will not pretend to say I am clever enough to totally understand, but I think I get some of your general drift.:blushing:

It seems to me that I am best placed to try and feel the sense of G force dropping off (as wow300 suggests) rather than send the rev counter round the clock for optimum pace.

See what you are saying Mantav8,

That way I guess you let the engine/gearbox decide the optimum performance in a blink of an eye.

Not like my adrenalin fuelled manic over revving.

all that effort, with gears lights rpms revs etc, just to beat a golf LOL hahahhahaha your car must be wack.

or just tune it, ecu , boost, breating mods. pulleys, lighthened parts. JOB DONE.
