Well i tucked away all my engine loom and instead of just patch fixing it i went hey i'll take the whole body loom that runs under the guards, shorten the heck out of it and bring it inside the car...

20 hours of work later i'm almost ready to shorten.

This seemed like a good idea in my head.

I'd just like to congratulate you on attempting this !

I done a complete internal loom swap only afew months ago when I updated

my aircon pods to the digital type.

I know how daunting it can be, but the feeling of relief is great when you get

it all back together and it actually works again !

Lee

Thanks mate.

You updated to the digital?

What year is your car? it was my understanding the digital control was ditched sometime between 94-96 and the changed to the older looking manual controls to give the driver more control over where the air would go. all cars i've seen here bar the only 96 i have seen had digital, perhaps it differs on the uk spec so figured i would ask

I was tempted to go to the manual controls as i know somebody with some for sale but i do think they look a bit dated, in saying this i would like the extra control. but the digital definately does look far better!

It's a 1996 Series 4 !

Got a donor loom from zerocooldel as well as the centre aircon parts and sensors.

Took a day to strip out and a day to get back working again, and wired in a new alarm

while I was at it.

I'm sure I was the first to ever be daft enough to try it so I documented it all which is

now in our FAQ section !

Aha sweet! now i just got to do the reverse as i'm already digital lol, you still got the old loom aircon parts and centres?

series 1 digital doesn't give you control over the direction, but series 2 does, you can swap the pod and the ecu for series 2 to get the directional ability (not sure what series yours is, or if you knew that)...

First relay box taking shape, contains fuses for horn and headlight relays, horn relay, rad fan relay, headlight dim relay.

Did not know! that do you know what year they changed to series 2?

I have 3 digital ones here but they all of them are the same and are 1989 1991 and 1992.

Cheers.

No probs, anything to stop you ruining your dashboard with a stone age looking pod! :)

At least it is digital already so not so bad but i'm definately keen on an s2 upgrade :devil2:

I've just had mine upgraded to S2 aircon, well worth it bud.

loving your work mate

got any pics and tips on the engine loom tuck.

still working on the underside of the car at the moment but ive already removed all the extra brackets and welded up any spare holes in the engine bay.

im going to be doing a complete loom tuck and fuel line reroute so that the plenum is totally uncluttered so some advice would be handy.

ive already done most of the loom around the rest of the bay,inc moving the fuse box to under the nose.

keep up the good work

Looking good mate!

How are you planning to reroute your fuel lines?

With the tuck there probably are much more sane ways to do it than the way i have. I have taken the whole engine loom apart to the ecu plug, so only what needs to come through the firewall ever comes in, essentially all i have coming in goes to the plenum for coilpacks and injectors, exhaust 02 and intake cam sensors, and the wiring for the CAS and water pipe sensors.

For the gearbox wiring if you are running auto you can feed to through the hole where the clutch master would go if you wanted to, but i've drilled a hole above the bellhousing so the wiring can just come up through there and hook into the main harness i've made, it's straight plug and play for ease of gearbox removal. the engine loom will only need plenum taken off should i need to engine pull, which is now an easy job with all the extra crap from the plenum gone.

The rest is inside the cabin and i was going to run it round seperately to the existing body harness the loops around the front of the car, but much of that wiring just runs to the relay box and gearbox wiring, so that whole loom is being shortened to come inside the car, relay box and all with only wiring for the lights, horns, ABS etc running forward, along with the wiring for the PTU and AFM for them engine loom running with it.

Thats the way i'm essentially doing it, but you could get away with just stripping down your engine loom but you will have to extend engine loom wires that run forward, so i picked less wiring rather than adding more to an already complicated system.

Hope that makes sense, i think i'm a bit bonkers but if i dont do it it will bug me, and i now have a far better understanding of how the car ticks. but alot of time was spent like this :detective:

here's a picture of my engine loom, everything laying on the guard is what to take inside the car which usually runs down the chassis rail.

You can see the ECU plug up by the mirror.

In the words of Captain Jack Sparrow responding to an accusation of being mad...

"Just as well because if i wasn't this would probably never work!" :boat:

thanks for the excellent response mate. That will be really helpful, i think your way is more like how i wanted to go.

im going to remove all the unnecessary bits off the plenum before i powder it etc and i dont want the fuel lines etc running over it so im going to remove the std connections to the regulator and damper from the fuel rail and braze on some -6 unions onto the back. then the fuel lines will exit out the back out of sight. ill hide the fpr down the back then and route the lines down the back of the engine. i have already relocated the fuel filter where the passenger side aiv valve was and the fuel lines are just tweaked to go under the chassis rail.

also just read up on using skyline coil packs that are alot shorter and could sit under a cover between the cams instead of poking up through the plenum. no wires etc but would mean a plenum pull to get to the plugs. undecided on this though.

ill have to "pop" over to see your zed one day as the mrs has been trying to get me over to NZ for ages as she lived there for a year.

Hmmm i see what ya upto! clever!

Yeah i've looked into the skyline coil packs but decided not to go that extreme as i'm looking to put a vh41de nissan v8 in within 2-3 years.

Heck yeah ya missing out man, wait until i got the v8 in then you can put your foot up it and scare yourself lol

I cant wait to see some pics of these simplified plenums etc. I wasn't really bothered about engine bays until a few months ago when I polished my plenum up, now I want a clean bay too

Reality is my car will never be in shows at least not for years until its all painted with the v8 in etc, but i just like to tinker with things and improve them, its a nasty addiction.
