Have got one of my reversing lights converted to a rear foglight with a red bulb and the problem is despite fitting a mirror polished reflector into the bulb housing it still looks a bit wishy-washy and not very bright.

ย

Has anyone got a red led bulb fitted, and if so are they a lot brighter?????

I believe that it's bulb to bulb, not necessarily the visible lens area.

ย

yeah, it can be interpreted in different ways...

ย

2. Positionโ€“

(d) Minimum separation distance between a rear fog lamp and a stop lampโ€“ A distance of 100 mm between the light-emitting surfaces of the lamps when viewed in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle

ย

it really depends on the definition of "light-emitting surfaces of the lamps"

ย

so as long as the test went along with it you could say it was bulb to bulb.

Have popped in a led bulb (cheers lee :) ) and its 10 times better.the old 'red' bulb was well past its best as most of the red had actually worn off!, so all sorted now :)

I haven't measured, but couldn't you disable the inner brake lights; then the converted reverse lights would be around 10cm from the brakelights? Plus I don't reckon many MOT testers would measure anyway, as long as ther all worked and could easily be distinguished.....

ย

Plenty of cars have the rear fog built into the rear light cluster now and TBH the fogs can be pretty damn close to the brake lights!! Attached photo for comparison - although mine is a UK spec ZX with the fogs in the bumper...:surrender:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I've had mine in the reverse section for years and have never had a problem with the MOT... so yeah... i can't see a problem unless someone wants to get picky...

ย

and unfortunately those MOT testers do exist... always best to find a guy you can trust that you know will do the right job without ripping you off.. and keep going to him.

I think the regs are;

ย

If the fog light, brake light and or tail light is in one whole unit, then the full lens surface must be a minimum of 100mm away, otherwise bulb to bulb in a completely separate unit (ie, in our reverse light area, it will be ok, if it's in the brake light unit, then it's not).
