Go to a local club and ask to book some 1-on-1 with an instructor. Tell him/her what you want to achieve and get out of the sessions. I find 1-on-1 far more rewarding and productive than in a group.

I think any form of fitness activity will help calm your stress levels. I've done a bit of boxing in the last few months, because the gym instructor is really into it and offered to give me some tuition. It very nearly killed me! But it was really enjoyable and very demanding - I don't think I went to the gym for 3 days after the first lesson! The exercise will get those endorphines flowing though and that should relieve some stress too, irrespective of which discipline you decide to train in.

I used to be well into Martial Arts - have not trained for a few years sinced I moved house & really miss it at times TBH.

Was a 4th dan black belt in Shotokan Karate but have trained in quite a few different styles over the years. Competed in Karate & kickboxing.

Was a complete lifestyle for me really - have some back problems now & really not sure if it would improve or worsen my back if I started training again :(

Go for it!! :)

Judo from the age of 4 and have trained in Muay Thai with Petchyindee for several years now, and still dabble in MMA/BJJ with guys from my previous place of work, some of which take it very seriously. Injury has forced me to take it easy for the last 18 months though.

I will also say that Krav Maga is a very good self defence system that can be adapted to suit the individual, again only dabbled in this through work.

Two of my three children go to Karate now, and have done since they were 4 years old. Both succesfully passed their latest grading last weekend with Central Dojo Hereford, good for discipline even if certain aspects are a little bit questionable for real world application.

As said previously, go along to your local leasure centre and enquire about the various classes and disciplines that they cater for.

Go along and watch a class and if you like what you see ask if you can attend. Most places will offer up the first few classes for free just so you can see if it's for you.

I been a black belt in Marital Arts for 26 years keeps me fit enough!

dan.

Shotakai Karate for two years got to blue belt! Really good fun and the guy who ran it was an NLP Practitioner. Great for self esteem, confidence and makes you less violent and less stressed.

Go for it!

bujinkan was quite good for me mentaly its good but for stress levels i found muay thai.done both for a few year uptwo new years ago when i done my knee

There is a new mma gym just opened on winton highstreet mate, above that garage opposite the church

Did ki aikido for quite a few years. They concentrate on the unification of mind and body. Think Steven segal before he became a fat old waster.

Def good relaxation yet physical.

Like all martial arts though, its critical to get a good instructor.

get a dog, do as i do, bit of fast walkingand jogging, it's great to take ya mind off thing's, nowt else matter's when out with the hound

alway's wanted to try kickboxing though, did a bit of everything as a kid, never lasted more than a few month's lol, should really do something as it's getting worse trying to get rent's out of people

Balls to the Jap slapping skills then, that'll be you needing a sawn off mate....problem solved

I started yoga last week as the company next door emailed to ask if we fancied joining in. The instructor is brilliant and believe me when i say it works out muscles you didn't even know you had!

You'll find you're incredibly energised afterwards but totally de-stressed :)

I hold a Black belt 1st Dan in Kickboxing and have been training for about 9 years or more and also hold a black belt in lau gar kung fu and have trained in that for approx 7 years, both arts of martial were in the same gym so was easy to go to both.. lucky me.. cost a fortune if you add up all the fees, but well worth it, you will feel fit , good , confident and calm. You have to be patient when learning tho as you will not become a michael jai white or jet li overnight and will have to learn all the boring bits first :) well worth it after though .... Also would recomend tournament fighting as it will give you a bigger buzz than any drug bunjee jump etc etc .......

Over the years Ive trained in Shotokan Karate and Taekwondo. Now im getting older ive struggled with both..

Started Lau Gar Kung fu earlier this year and love it, even looks at tai chi but but dint need to kick your own head height (which I cant do anymore). Great mixture of people. I like the classes rather than 1-2-1 because of the social side as well.

My wife and kids train in Lau Gar as well, great fun..
