Whats up here then...tech thread

Ok new owner, done around 2k miles in it, not happy with performance or mpg, wanted a cambelt anyway so got involved with the running issue.

Full Nissan service history UK zed with 60k ish miles, nice condition, when I test drove it the idle was lumpy and erratic, the performance had massive holes in the delivery of power, the turbo gauge would swing up then off and even when on boost was rubbish with bucking and sudden power ups.

As I said at idle it was very lumpy and when revving would not only dip but struggle to pick up, coaxing the revs up slowly it was ok (ish) the exhaut smell was evil.

So whats wrong here then??

Ok three pics, whats wrong, why is it wrong and why is the problem causing the symptoms above.

Ps. No prizes for saying the plenum is missing....Jamie spotted that already:wink:

Come on guys "why is it wrong and why is the problem causing the symptoms above"

didnt nissan do a recall on some models with a series 1 ptu? maybe it should have a series 2????

Not in the UK, I don't think Mikey. In the USA there was a recall to update the PTU, but the 300zx didn't sell in enough numbers over here to warrant a recall.

So as usual, us poor Brits had to pay for a new PTU when the S1 item failed outside the warranty period. Which as we know, they all do/did.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Vacuum lines damaged? To be honest I cant realy tell. Has it got TT injectors then?

Fuel filter piped up wrong? Causing fuel starvation?

Looks like the timing is way to far advanced also from the cas position in the pic :pinch:

Yes your right, why? with the non turbo injectors fitted and already running so badly?

The n/a injectors is something we have seen a few times now and is puzzling especially in this case with the full Nissan history.

Jeff

Nissan techies cant fit a belt and get some marks lined up so tried to adjust the error out using the cas perhaps Jeff ? wouldnt be the first time youve come across that one i bet :whistling:

Nissan Service? Will be wrong plugs then, well come to think of it, wrong everything!:lol:

only joking.

was going to say there was a serious air leak into the lower plenum, by the looks of some of the marks where the gasket should of sat, looks like they replaced the plenum but not the gasket causing an air leak, they then thought that by adjusting the cas unit it was the timing out?

sorry i meant they look like the wrong injectors N/A perhaps and from the look of the cas its miles outi! so they bin running round in circles trying to set it up!

You were spot on matey, quite why the wrong injectors had been fitted is a mystery, maybe lack of knowledge? someone had been doing their best to get it running better but it was never going to happen.

Hi Jeff,

First of all thank you! The difference is unreal. It's gone from being the fat asthmatic kid on sports day to Usain Bolt over night!

I'm really pleased with how it's turned out and I'm sure I'll be back in the future for anything else I need doing.

I can't wait to drive it home through Brecon tomorrow. Hopefully it will be sunny enough to have the roof off too :)

Thanks again,

James

Great news, always good to get a happy ending eh? was a pleasure for us to sort out the issue on such a nice example.

if it had a full nissan service history then who fitted the wrong injectors and tried to set it up after? :confused1:

dan.:cool3:

guess that would be nissan bud. lol. dont go enjoying it too much now its running proper it might surprise you :p

I'll go over the service invoices when I get home to try and work that out.

It's my daily z33bolt, so I can't afford to have too many big surprises :p atleast until my motorbike is reassembled that is. So far so good though, I'm really enjoying my first highpowered RWD experience :D

Hard to tell if it was Nissan or not really.

There's a few invoices about 3 years back which are just listed as general/mechanical and then a price without any description of work which was carried out. While it wouldn't surprise me, there isn't any definitive record here.

Based on Jeff spotting that the gaskets being aftermarket I can only assume it was a 3rd party garage that did the work and it's undocumented.

The drive home was fantastic though, had the roof off the whole way :thumbup1:

If it's aftermarket gaskets and the wrong injectors, I'd say likely a home job, probably done by someone with enough mechanical knowledge to know adjusting the CAS would change the timing and may help etc. etc. but didn't know about the differing types of car enough to know the injectors are different on an N/A.

Reason I say that, is because a garage would order both gaskets and parts either direct from Nissan or from a pattern part supplier by the registration, which would bring back the UK TT ZX, hence me ending up with the wrong belts for Roses car from Andrew Page the other week, she has a JDM car which has a shorter fan belt. DOH! :D Obviously if the garage was ordering by reg and getting the UK TT ZX (The only UK Model) they'd have received TT injectors. That said, I've known certain garages that will use used parts and tell you they bought them new. :2guns: Also owners do provide their own parts of course, but the lack of a receipt would suggest home DIY to me.
