Removing prop????

Just trying to get the prop off the subframe but having dramas as it's still fitted to the subframe/diff.

I have a wreckers bar fitted with the correct type of socket/bit but is there a particular method for removing it as it rotates freely?

I have just removed the very same item, only difference was, mine was still in the car but the fix might be the same.

I used the handbrake on full to stop the diff turning, letting it off again to spin the remaining bolts into position. If you still have the rear disc's in place you could manually lock the handbrake on using the adjusters. This might be enough to stop the shaft from turning. Might be worth a good soak in WD40 over night first.

from the pic it looks like the prop isent connected to the box so i dont think that will work????

Judging by the pic I would say it is connected to the car let alone the box

yes mate it is clearly connected to the car as it is still on the diff. come on steamy wake up;)

Could be just me but it looks like the subframe isn't connected to the car :)

Still think this might be worth a shot. When I split mine it was more about restricting the movement rather than the actual tightness of the bolts.

12" tube and a standard Allen key worked for me.

Sorry should have made that clear in the first post. This is a spare rear subframe & diff that Big-Jim kindly gave me last weekend.

It's not attached to the car. I need to strip the prop off as that's for another forum member, the remainder will be sand blasted, powder coated and fitted with solid bushes ready for a one for one swap with the current subframe on the LWB.

I need to find some way of locking off the diff without damaging anything but really struggling at the mo'

you rough bugger. lol. yeah it will work allright at rounding the bolt out:rofl: you need a steady but constant force on it. lock the prop off.

nahhh needs shocking off with impact same as front crank pully

lol. front crank pully comes off easy if you know what ya doing you rough bugger. lol.

bolt i meant :tt2:

yeah so did i. lol. you cant get into it if the engine is in with an air gun. what you need there is a nice big bar and put the car in gear and get somebody to sit on the brakes just to be safe. comes off a treat:)

My way of cracking the crank pulley bolt (easy way) lol,

I use a breaker bar, turn it fully clockwise to it touches the ground and flick the key, only a quick flick then check, normally its undone, but if not another quick flick, until undone,

Allways works 4me, Now i will wait to be told off, lol.

I do this on most cars (mobile mechanic) When i cant use an impact gun, Just make sure the car you do it to, as keys on the pulleys,

Otherwise its all over,

A guy did it in my uncles garage on a focus, not only did he bend valves one snapped and went through the piston,

yeah a focus uses compression fit on the crank pullys. lmao. what an idito:rofl:

Hate doing focus cambelts, the bolt is a stretch bolt too, have to measure it,

Even when i know i have done it right still worry, why not just put keys on them,

Dont know if you have ever tried it using the starter but its allways been fine on zeds and done quite a few.

i hear a few people have done it that way but i have never done it myself. as for the focus, your ment to get a new crank bolt with the timing belt kit anyway as it is a stretch bolt and shouldent be used again

Have not done one for a long time normally avoid them now cause work for myself and they make me worry to much,

when done them in garage sure never use to get bolt and had to measure them, maybe garage was just buying cheap kits or something,

But that would of been the best way new bolt, is that all the kits or ford original,

i dont get ford original kits but the ones i get have them in so i guess they all come with them now?? but as you say its a stupid idea anyway

Take it your a mechanic too,

Goodluck with scuffed oily hands that never get clean, It must be the worse job in the world but i love being under the bonnet of a motor.

God knows why.

Take it your a mechanic too,

PMSL!!:lol::lol:

Sorry Beany,couldn't resist!:tt2:
