Whats the deal with using cooking oil instead of diesel? Is it possible with all diesel cars, new and old?

Has anyone tried this?

Hello mate,

Older diesels work better but it all depends on your injection pump. What car have you got?

I've been making biodiesel from old veg oil for a few years now ;)

Loads of info out there on the web, various claims of success. No way would I be doing it on a decent new motor with EFI and loads of sensors.

Might be worth it on an old banger with a mechanical pump etc., as a run around.

Until you get done for tax evasion. Might as well be running red diesel, you will get fined the same.

Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Hi.

Newer cars cant run on it 'as is' because its too thick and creates pressure in all the wrong places.

Older stuff is no problem,My mate and me used to run 3% white spirit in veg oil and it took a second longer to start when cold, but actually had more zip when using it.

Mine was a ducato van, his was a hilux that did 150k running on it.

Leaves a really obvious chips shop smell out of the exhaust too.hmmmn.chips.lol.

You're allowed to use it, up to a certain amount.Be hard to prove how much you spent on it though :tt2:

? your allowed to use up to 2500 litres of the stuff before you have to pay tax on it, considering there isn't a way of telling how much you have used with in the year, its highly unlikely you will get done for tax evasion.

I used to run a citroen xantia with a bosch fuel pump on 100% rape seed oil, only in winter did you have to mix a bit of diesel with it to thin it out. if you want a cheap car to run, get a diesel xantia, but make sure its got the bosch pump on it and not the Lucas pump, the Lucas pump cant handle the thickness of the oil compared to the bosch, also you don't have to do anything with the oil, just go into tescos and get some rapeseed oil (vegetable oil) and stick it in the tank, happy driving.

I strongly suspect that is complete *****cks, but I might be wrong - You need to notify them of use, and pay the duty before you use it. That would suggest from day one. No mention of a "tax free allowance".

Quote from the website;

"You can use vegetable oil in your car and mix it with diesel (vegetable oil is generally used as a substitute for diesel) but you will have to make arrangements to pay the Excise Duty to HMRC. See question 'How do I notify Revenue & Customs that I am using cooking oil in my vehicle?'.

Important Note: It is illegal to run your car on any fuel substitute without having first paid us the duty."

You are supposed to do monthly returns. Falsifying a return is an offence, and if they do catch you, you are going to get reamed.

You might want to visit a few of the veggie running forums, they have covered in great depth the in's and outs of running cooking oil as fuel, and i can tell you now, you can use up to 2500litres of it BEFORE being taxed on it.

You do not pay tax before that 2500, the 2500 limit is there so haulage firms cant take the piss basically, not to stop joe blogs on the street running his car at 45mpg on cooking oil, if you work out how many miles your going to cover on 2500 liters per year, i can guarantee unless your doing 70 miles a day to and from work, your not going to come close to that anytime soon.

Like I said, I may be wrong, but according to the information on currently on the HMRC website, there is no mention of what you are saying. Did you look at the link I posted?

For the 2nd time, here is a quote;

Can I use vegetable oil in my car if I mix it with normal diesel?

Have a think about this; your claim of 2500L/60L average tank = 41 refills a year.

As you point out, that covers most folks need. If HMRC don't mind losing that revenue, why is road fuel duty not lower instead?

I'm not convinced the defence of "I read it on a veggie forum" is going to cover my ar5e if I end up in court.

If it turns out there is an allowance, then fair play, but 2500L seems hugely optimistic. Also, there is a need for fuel producers to demonstrate that their fuel is to spec. How do you go about doing that?

ooh hum.

4.2.1 Exempt producers/users

If you have produced or used less than 2,500 litres of:

■any biofuel, or

■any other fuel substitute or additive

within the last 12 months, and/or expect to produce or use less than 2,500 litres in the next 12 months, you are an exempt producer and do not need to register with us and account for duty. However, there are simple record keeping requirements, which are described in paragraph 4.9.1.

Production includes the manufacture or processing of road fuel, and the setting aside of any product that has not been charged with duty, with the intention of using it as road fuel.

what i meant by the veggy users forum, is they have gone over this legal aspect with a fine tooth comb taking reference points from offical government documents.

PS, it took all of 10 seconds to do a google search with 2500limit for bio fuels, to find what needed to be found.

Haha, and he delivers the finisher.

Good info all around though thanks. Was interested in getting the Mrs a diesel and thinking of fuel savings. Now to decide which vehicle.

Do your research though, not all vehicles can run veggie as a fuel substitute with out modification.

Surely vegetable oil is no cheaper than diesel these days?

Well I'd be hoping to become best mates with the local chippy and filter their used oil.

i use Veg oil in my van ... TD van at that .... Newer cars that have Common Rail Injection ( TDCI ) & some TDDI Dont go there it will fook up the pump and injectors

but make sure you do the mix right ...

i normaly run 70% Oil 30% Diesel most of the year and Winter 50/50

Everything you need to know right here - http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php

The 2500 limit tax free is correct. It's left down to you to show you have kept records of what you have used. Obviously if you're records show that you've used 1000 litres and you're mots show you've done 50k, then obviously the tax man would be very interested ;)

The veg oil forum link is really good, very helpful people and they are on the right side of the law, you won't get any info that you shouldn't ;)

Fair play. There is conflicting information on the HMRC website. Looks like the page I linked to is outdated. At least I had the good grace to state that I might be wrong regards the tax position in advance.

its ok, when it comes to the revenue department, they always try and hide the information you need, especially when it comes to tax free stuff lol

My old 02 GT TDI Golf was a flyer on the stuff! ... no more than 70/30 and a pure diesel fill now and again to clean it a bit..Then veg oil went from £1.25 for 3 litres to £1 a litre though and killed the incentive. Not tried filtered/recycled yet, but considering it for my E320!

easily to filter old oil to cleaner than new oil ;) difficulty is getting hold of the stuff now, most of us have to pay for it :(
