My ZED was registered on the 30th April 1993. (UK spec TT manual)

It has cats fitted, and I have read a lot about de catting. What are the benifits of doing this, and can I get away without them?

Cheers all......

less backpressure, faster turbo spool up, basically, you're removing a huge lump of metal out of the exhaust system, not sure how it works with UK cars, but usually pre 1995 imports don't need any cats.

If you're using standard (oem) turbos then removing the cats will, as said, reduce the back pressure, but this can accelerate the oil seal failure......

If you've still got the oem exhaust it's better to replace this with a full bore exhaust because the cats are full bore

I'm sure JeffTT will come along and confirm all this !

I am sure I have standard turbos, but the engine was re built some time ago before I got the car, I can tell you I have a mongoose exhaust system and 555 injectors.....lol

Just dont want to take cats off, if car then fails MOT.

as long as your engine is healthy, you shouldn't have any problems, i'd guess about half of us have de-cats (me included), and no problems with MOTs, (well not usually emissions anyways :) It's just the loss of back pressure can make a dodgy turbo oil seal more obvious, and doesn't help it, but if they are good you'll be fine... (my opinion anyways) :) HTH...
