assuming the oil pressure gauge is fine, what else can cause low oil pressure on TT engines.

Featured Replies

It didnt when my piston rings failed in my shorty!

Reason i found out my rings where knackered was when the oil pressure dropped to next to nothing!

maybe oil pressure dropped and damaged rings, dont think rings would cause low oil pressure alone, but i may b wrong lol.

ok this is just my drunked mind working over time here. lol. surely a broken piston ring will cause combustion gases to pressurise the sump and therefore increase oil pressuer?? i can see the the point in that if a lot of rings failed and therefore the engine couldent run correctly then oil pressure might drop???? i should stop drinking. lmao

Think where they measure oil pressure is in the crank and bearings,

rings worn think causes crank case pressure pops dip stick out,

no and yes. lol.

oil pressuer is measured from the block at a pressure point. and yes if there is too much crank case pressure then dip stick will pop out but i think it will still increase oil pressure a little??

lol,

dont it measure it from inside the wall of the block where it goes through little holes,

im interested too now,

i had dip stick pop out once on my old engine the smoke that come out the back of motor was unbelievable,

push dip stick back in and it was fine but thought i had blown the engine up.

Crank case pressure has no bearing on oil pressure, worn rings etc will not alter it either, the oil pressure is made by a tight seal on bearings and journals on the crank. Its very very rare the pump is the cause in my experience. tbh ive never seen a faulty zed oil pump.set of new crank bearings and a crank polish brings the oil pressure right up.Zed pumps are really strong, its a shame the bearings are not.

oil pump failed on mine. lost pressure and next thing was the bearings spun and snapped a conrod ..

complete engine swop needed is there was holes all over the place

Spot on (as usual )

Oil pressure is all down to the Big end and Conrod bearings. Low oil level too or a problem with collection at the pickup. Unfortunatly The VG is suseptical to oil starvation under high cornering forces due to its relatively small sump and oil pick up location, even more so when oil level is anything below max. This will quickly lead to finding your rod sticking out the side of your block.

How did you know it was the pump that failed ?

That would have almost certainly been a bearing failed on a vg,once its worn it looses its nip in the con rod, spins on the crank and seizes up throwing the rod out.The loss of oil pressure is caused by the worn bearing not the oil pump not making enough pressure.

also something to check is that the sump has no sign of damage ie: a dent as this can alter the oil volume in the sump and can cause pick up problems,, had this one before...

just a thought

if the big end bearings was worn would they make knocking sounds ?

Yes for sure, they can be awkward to isolate as the vg,30s plenum seems to make the sound travel giving the impression its top end.

Interesting post,I have a 1992 TT manual, my oil preasure gauge sometimes just hovers above 0, then when running only goes up to around a third of the gauge. Could it be that the gauge is just so unreliable?

If it is the standard gauge, then yes. Very notorious for the sender to go tits and give abnormal readings.

Alz.

Aaron your engine is good you saw the symptons you get with ring failure with pressure out the dip stick. That oil we used could be of a very low viscosity (thin) therefore you will get low oil pressure as it is easy to move around either that or the sender on this engine isn't too good. Speak to the old owner of the engine and compare results

Not sure what is good oil pressure...........but,

My 300 was built by Jimmer in March 2009, and the oil pressure was then and still is now, without any change.....

Cold engine: 60-75 psi

Running temp engine on tick over: 20-25 psi

Running temp engine on normal load: 40-45 psi

Running temp engine on hard load: 55-60 psi

Alz.

Not sure if this is any help, but just my input here......
