Clutch noises ...?

Hi All,

I have a strange tooting noise that reveals itself when the car is accelerating sometimes. I think I've heard it referred to as clutch 'honk'.

Anyone else experienced this? Is it normal? Is my clutch slipping??? :-(

The car is a 90TT Auto Jap.

Cheers,

RobH

You are not alone Rob have been trying to trace the cause if this on both mine and a customers car for some time, even a full gearbox service has not cured it, in fact was on the motorway in top gear and found I could induce the honk sound between 2500 and 2800 revs either side of that no noise, now as the box was NOT changing gear then I am assuming it is NOT the box and is a throttle/load related noise and seems louder drivers side on mine, will be looking in to this in time and will let you know.

Nb Have been told cone filters can cause this are you running a cone filter?

Hi Jeff,

I am running a Blitz cone BUT! It was happening on the stock air box previous to installation :-(

The power does seem to be somewhat sapped the same time the noise occurs...(?)

Honk is usually the recirc valves being heard thru the air filter but not std box. U sure its the clutch/box? Maybe there is a vacuum leak around the recirc valves?

Having given this a lot more thought it really must be something other than the auto box but just happens to show it`s self between some gear changes. The re-circ idea may be a possiblity, they do bleed slighty across the boost tubes to maintain an even intake pressure on light throttle and with a cone filter fitted it would be heard more as the duct is now open, I myself can not remember now if mine did it before the filter change or not (to long ago) will have a look at the re-circs again, any other idea`s anyone??/

Hmmm...well all I know is that mine definately did it before the removal of the standard box. Admittedly it seems to do it more now...

It always seems to be just under 3krpm, just before gear change - seems worse if it's not sure whether to change or not (i.e. too fast for 3rd, too slow for 4th)

PS Surely Nissan themselves should know something about this??

maybe this helps:

the 'honk' that the recircs make always happens around 0 psi of boost...

OK thanks guys, but is it a problem? Obviously I'd rather it didn't make the noise. I'll have to check the recirc valves (never heard of 'em!!) - anybody know of a technote on this??

Cheers :-)

if the recirs are the cause of the honk, it's nothing serious only annoying...
