Hi guys,

Looking at options to replace my smokey tubs and am after some advice. I've looked at the Z1 products but not too sure which would be best.

Will be for road use with the odd trip to the nurburgring or track day, I'm not looking at upgrading the engine internals so massive tubs are not an option.

I've looked at the option of using a pair of T28's, these are labelled as replacements for the 200SX, would these fit a 300?

I also don't want to spend a fortune on them either, the wife is already spending my Afghanistan bonus and turbos ain't on her list LOL.

Cheers, Rob

Very similar to mine is your remit.

I have stock engine and amongst other bits I have bought 600cc injectors, Pace SMIC's and have got a pair of Godspeed T28 Tubbies to go on, FYI they were, with the postage exactly 1,000USD, then just £35.00 import tax

T28's are for the 200sx, but there is only one turbo. If you pair them up on the VG then they are a pretty decent upgrade. Several people have been down this route and I think the general consensus was good, great even!

Personally, I went down the GT525 route. I didn't want to loose any driveability but was after a little more poke. The problem is they're over a grand new and probably difficult to come by second hand. Its much easier to find T28's or equivelant and at a more reasonable price (for second hand ones). But, do you want to fit second hand turbos?

As another option, for about 600 quid you could have your stock turbos upgraded to 360 degree thrust bearing type.

Decisions, decisions eh?

360 bearings alone will do nothing for performance, but you can have the housings enlarged with larger internals fitted.

This is exactly what the GT525 kit is though, modified stock turbos.

I used to deal a lot with Turbodynamics, who would do this work for us. Prices varied on spec, and condition of the supplied turbos however - typically £900-£1300 a pair.

When Z1 brought out its GT525 kit though it made more sense to go that route.

Granted. Performance wouldn't be increased, but you would have piece of mind which is just as, if not more, important than performance. I was just trying to be practical - the man said he didn't want to spend mega bucks.

Cheers for the replys,

Not going the second hand route, I'm happy to do recon but only by a known and reputable company.

I like the sound of the T28 option, not just for cost but it will go straight on with no pissing about. Living in Germany that's important as NO garage will work on them here.

As I'm not going to be around for nearly 4 months from Friday ease is key too, I want all the bits in my cellar for when I get back so I can get the job done.

Be interested to see how these are mate, I've seen them online but can't find any reviews. How far you got with them?

you running uprated internals / pistons with those?

had done on 2 engines. :-):tongue_smilie:

3rd will be a jimmer special. just waiting on this one to go POP :shifty:

Right I think I'm going down the T28 route.

Seen few new ones on eBay for between £250-£280 each. Take into consideration having to get odds and sods I'm looking at £600ish for parts.

What roughly would I be looking at for the labour cost, I would like to do it myself but a pro is probably the best idea.

Can anyone see any flaws in my plans????????

Cheers, rob

Geez mate and that's new ones on ebay?

theres a reason why a pair of turbo's should be around 1K, decent that last!

If fitting turbo's on a zed was as easy as a 200sx then no probs, but it ain't for sure.

Yowers kit was pretty much ideal considering bolt on and all you need.

Yeah seconded,

It might say T28 in size, but it certainly ain't a Garrett unit at that price. Given how quickly a turbo spins and how hot it's operating temperature is, buying cheap turbos will only cost more in the long run. As tempting as the power vs cost ratio may be, I would think more about longevity.

Yeah see your point, will have to save a bit more then. With the divorced downpipes, postage and tax looks at being around the £1300 mark. More than I intended but never mind.

Will be my only purchase for a while LOL.

Is this a realistic DIY job?

I contemplated for 6 months perhaps on what route to take with the turbos and have plumped for these but people are dissing them  I do realise you get what you pay for but did not want second hand, you have to ask why are they not being fit if they are any good, they do not come up very often either and it is a big risk for the wonga

I dont intend running at their max as they say, gulp 600bhp, more at the 450 mark and I am not going to thrash at every oppurtunity, just there if I need it, I do have a EBC.

The mods will be fitted in late Sept so cannot update further.

It is also possible that I already have uprated turbos on a quick inspection, so I might have options once the engine is out

As some of you know I used to run Kinuagwa turbos off ebay on my s14a (hence my name and not a plug) which I found to be a good alternative to Garretts as thier price level was usually 2/3's of the equivalent model. But I do take in to account the ease of a turbo change on a sr20det against that of the vg30dett and this would influence my decision when choosing uprated turbo's on a z32. I now run a Greddy T67 on my s14a but this was due to a bargain off ebay from a smashed up MR2 turbo :hammer: otherwise I would have upgraded to Kinugawa's own T67.

This was my old TD06SL20G with a t25 flange. Cost me £600 and was good for 1.5 bar old day long! As you can see the build quality is very good and it felt and drove like a quality product.

As i mentioned earlier check out sxoc for T28's or T28R's as they come up quite often as 200sx owners usually upgrade again to 2871r's/3071r's etc.

Rob, sorry to hijack your thread with such a long post but I hope this post is both helpful and informative in you choosing the correct turbo set up in the future.

Appreciated mate, all info is good in my book as I really don't know which way to go with it.

Never mind got 3 months to think about it LOL

Bit of a thread revival LOL.

I've decided to go down the T28 route. They will be tubs removed from a 200SX and proper Garrett items.

Will get them refurbed so will be as new when they get fitted.

Can anybody who has this set up already tell me what other parts I will need, oil pipes etc.

Cheerz, Rob

If someone is doing the refurb for you have them "clock" one of them as obviously the Zed has left and right sided turbo's.
