Got myself a coilover key, but as you can see the coilovers are a little rusty. I've given them a nice coating with WD40 but they wont budge!!

Anyone have any ideas of what i can use, or how to get these moving??

Cheers Baz. I was thinking of giving it a good old wack...but everytime i have ever gone down that route its ended in tears and a zed in a worse condition than before!!

Is there any lubricant better than WD-40 that would get at the rust??

You can how get some stuff called "freeze you nuts off" I go mine from a motor factors

Its is very good stuff use it more then wd40 now.

Is the nut alloy? looks like it in the photo.

Bad news if it is steel and alumimium tend to react over time (electrolitic corrosion ) and can be a *u%$ to free off. Alloy tends to become a bit brittle with age as well so be wary of applying excessive force.

best to keep firing WD or the likes on it for the next week or so in the hope it penetrates down the threads

those are a set teins i guess,

ive freed off one set before, the only way possible was with a big set of stiltsens. dont heat them because they are gas filled.

penetrating oil is what you really want, wd40 aint up to the job really

Yeah well thats what i was afraid of Ossian - can see my self rounding it or just snapping something!

Thanks very much for your efforts Jmwuk, i'll get some of that stuff on the go!!

also best to clean up the threads with wire bush to so when you do finally get them moving they have a clean thread to travel along

soak in rust off, spray it on and leave overnight, clean the threads with a fine wire brush, will be hard to start off with, but you dont want it to slip of the threads, then its knackerd

Penetrating oil has to be worth a shot (apparently WD40 isnt that effective at penetration), "PlusGas" is meant to be pretty decent.

I use that stuff at work - Wurth products are excellent!

Personally looking at your struts I would remove them & take the springs off first, give the threads a good wire brushing to clear as much rust off as possible, then use the rust off ice - give it a good couple of blasts, it really does creating a chilling effect!! :sorcerer:

Then give it a good squirt of penetrating oil & give them a turn with some decent grips.

If you are trying to do it in situ watch the collar doesnt break with your hands in there & the load of the spring against it :scared:

Yep, PlusGas is much better than WD40.

Might try to heat to see if they lossen... I don't know if that might damage the coilovers but I would try it before bying new ones.

Still no budging, but havent tried the freeze spray just yet. Out of interest does anyone actually know what make my coilovers are?

  • Author

Stupid question... but are these coilovers actually height adjustable or just tension adjustable.

They look like mine, Tein HA, supposedly, according to tinterweb, they're ONLY height adjustable and are not tension adjustable, but others say different and Mikey for example can't see them being height adjustable etc. If you manage to get yours unseized and adjusted, let me know how you got them unseized and whether they were height adjustable or not, cos I wanna do mine.
