Gearbox oil change

How many litres to fill a manual gearbox and what grade, how do you know its full when it starts to pour out the side hole?

cheers Mark

i got a 5 litre bottle of manual gearbox oil. raise the bottle higher than the zed (make sure its not dripping down the side of the bottle) after emptying the gearbox, i left the side screw undone, started sucking on the hose till i see the oil (clear hose is best for this, wouldn't recommend a mouth full of gearbox oil) its very thick stuff so takes some lungs to get it shifted, once it starts moving, stick the hose in the side hole, remove the hose when it starts leaking out the gearbox and cap both the bottle (first) gearbox after.

Hint for you, to undo the drain nuts and filler nuts, use a 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar with nothing on it.

mine just (Literally tonight) took 2.5 litres and was full enough (Because we ran out). It should take nearer 3, or probably close to 4 if you drained the oil cooler as well etc. Basically you know it's full when it starts to spill out the fill hole.

LMFAO or buy or borrow a proper pump like we did, luckily Mikey had one at work.

why buy a pump? what ever happened to a bit of manual labour lol

Erm the last couple of guys to do it died from gear oil poisoning? Plus they also made a right mess of their garage floor, with the 2+ litres that weren't needed and flowed out of the pipe and gearbox with this method when it was full, lol THAT'S why you buy a pump!

probably the least of their worries as they were laying there dead on the garage floor :whistling:

Sorry, but if your stupid enough not to use a clear see through hose, oh and have lost the ability to SPIT. well... thats just asking for trouble really.

it really doesnt flow fast enough to get a gob full of oil matey.

Pump = £20ish

Mouth Full of Oil = NO THANKS!

Can the gear box be refilled without removal??

yes mate.

I wouldn't advice filling it before fitting unless you have the use of a transmission jack and a pit

or if your ian just get a gob full of oil, crawl under the car and spit it everywhere in the hope some goes in:rofl:

rofl¬!

OK people cant frigging read, try sucking custard through a garden hose, thats about as fast as your going to be drawing that gearbox oil out of that tub.

Cant understand how someone stood there and died from doing it personally, with a clear hose you can see perfectly well when its past the half way point. stick the hose in and let gravity to the rest. gear box oil doesnt get any where near your chops.

No one really died, well not to my knowledge

I am about 80% through my conversion but never thought about how to fill the damn thing back up....

Can anybody post a pic of the fill port??

Cheers

same plug as on the underside to drain it mate, Circular plug with a Square recess in, its located on the drivers side of the gear box about half way up.

Just jack up the drivers side to fill, get ya head under the car, you'll see two 1/2 inch square drive plugs, one on the bottom to drain, one higher up on the drivers side to fill. Easy, which is why I got Mikey to do it :D

firstly ian keep your knickers on. lol.

second, he didnt stand there and die he wasd laying down:rofl:.

your so gay;)

i go commando nowadays :tank:

we get there in the end matey:)

Like when we were discussing where to drain the oil before we did it, discussing the possibility of cutting open a 5litre empty oil bottle to then have to pour it somewhere else because the catch can was full, then realised eventually, we could empty the catch can into the empty 5 litre oil bottle, then just use the catch can, we always get there in the end!
