Trying to find insurance for my girlfriends VW Polo, its nothing special just a 1.4 worth £1000, she is 23, no claims or accidents etc and all the quotes are coming back £500+!

Call me old fashioned, but I was expecting more like £300-odd or £400 at a push.

Can anyone recommend a decent insurer as all these compare the annoying adverts, confused.shite and moneystupidmarket are robbing pigs.

I refuse to believe we cant find it cheaper, or am I wrong?

Try phoning around mate, I've always found cheaper insurance by doing that.

Yeah I've always stood by that too. Hopefully someone will let me know a reliable firm that aren't going to rip us off :shifty:

go for ones not found on the price comparison sites, try quoteline direct as well. if they aint on a price comparison site, they generally tend to be cheaper, also not well known insurance companies tend to be cheaper as they are trying to get your custom. but make sure you search for reviews before you buy.

wouldn't bother with sheilas wheels, they are over priced. direct line, even though they say "no middle man" are also very expensive i found compared to others.

hes getting it for his mrs, i do have a mother that drives you know, and shes not too good at computers, so i help her get insurance lol

I think insurance is very specific tbh so whats good for one may not suit another ... but our family car is insured with Privilege very competatively, give them a call to see how they work out for her :)

Direct Line say they aren't on price comparison websites so come to them for the best deal.

£879!! :2guns:

I was with AA Insurance for 9 years but this year they gave me a mental quote!! I cancelled and now with Kwik Fit Insurance :) (Who coincidentally quoted me a ridiculous price last year!) lol....

I reckon they make it up as they go along :)

I know this pain. We pay about £600ish on each Z, when we had the Toyota Estima TDi Auto, it cost us just under £1000 ffs. All because it was an import and an 8 seater.

My brother in law is trying to insurance an impreza wrx and the cheapest quote he has had so far is £3200. Its a joke when the insurance costs more than the car

My daughter is 22 with 4years ncd insured with Swinton fully comp protected £525 paid with breakdown and legal on a 206 sport 1.4 value £1650 with £50 cash back

I spent frickin ages trying to get the girlfriend's insurance down.

We renewed it last month - after she completed her first 12 months on her own policy (and got 1 years NCB). Last year she payed 1000 - with zero NCB - and this year the renewal was 1350. So after much looking around (and many companies refusing to quote on account of her EU licence), we went back to the comparison websites. Low and behold her current insurer offered the lowest rate - back to 1000 before credit etc.. I phoned them up and asked why as a new customer we we're offered a better rate than an existing one... Sat and listened to 5 minutes of utter tosh, then finally agreed to resign if we could have the internet quote.

As a matter of interest though, I was keen to see what else she could get insured on, if we change her car - so had a bit of a play on a comparison site. These are roughly what she was quoted:

Clio 1.2 Sport (current car) - 1000

Mazda MX5 - 1000

Toyota MR2 - 1350

Clio 2.0 Sport - 1500

Golf GTi MkIV - 1550

Audi TT - 1650

200SX - 1750

Toyota Celica - 2000

Mini Cooper S - 2000

Honda Civic Type R - 2100

Seat Ibiza Cupra - 2200

Seat Leon Cupra - 2500

Nissan Pulsar - 3000

Mitsibishi FTO - 3100

Nissan Skyline - 3600

Biggest Surprise for me was the 200SX, or the missus' next car, as I prefer to call it! She wants a Celica, but I offered to pay her insurance (again) if she gets a car I want to drive! Was also surprised how high the FTO was, quite fancied one up until that point.

Got it done a few minutes ago, I rang admiral who she is currently with and moaned, hey presto a £50 discount appears out the blue. So thats the cheapest but still £470, I havent paid that much for years! :2guns:

The FTO quote is the one that surprised me.....maybe the insurance companies figure that if you're the kind of person who wastes their money on a gash car like that, then you obviously don't mind getting ripped off.....so bumped the quote up as a result!

its not all about performance its about satistics aswel, i know when i looked about for a car the zed was far cheaper than a skyline of any sort or m3 because they have a stigma to them

Got quoted 750 on an old vauxhall frontera yesterday, I was only going to pay 400 for the car so that was a no-no, which still leaves me without transport though lol

Is this why you're called Jap Slapper? On account of your hostility to other Jap cars! The FTO is a pretty looking coupe with reasonable poke and would be a decent enough car for my missus to drive around in. It might not be the last word in chassis dynamics, performance or economy - but I still prefer the looks of it compared to modern euro boxes. I think there are far worse cars you could take offence to..

I think the reason they are so expensive to insure is on account of their appeal to would-be boy racers and their likelihood of getting stacked. But 3000 for a 2.0l FWD car (even an import) to insure, is a bit ridiculous. Especially when you consider a Clio 2.0 Sport would crucify it in terms or performance and driveability.

470 is pretty good going for insurance. Its alright having a 20 year old zed on a classic policy, but I would guess most people are paying a minimum of 300-500 for a normal schitbox A-B motor. My old dears pay 200 quid a year and they live in 50 million acres of arctic tundra! The only crime up there is the occaisional sheep molestation

and now its in the Gov spotlight with new legislation that says it has to be sorned if not insured, and kept off the road ...just another Gov rip off ...the fair trades commission sjould get involved ..but unfortunatley its all a back lash of the littegation society we inherited from the septics....have you had an accident or been involved in an accident that wasnt your fault ...KERCHING $$$ insurance companies have to find millions to pay these toss pots that claim for a broken finger nail and the cost is handed down to Mr Joe Honest as usual .......in thsese days you cant beat em ..so may as well join em ...ow my whiplash

I totally agree that these 'where's there's blame, there's a claim' outfits are just a piss take. Did you hear about that bloke who had about 40 accidents on the same roundabout? Each time with a car full of 'mates' who all got out holding their necks..

But, as far as the new SORN policy goes, I'm in favour of that. There's way too many people driving without insurance - which is why my premium goes up every year instead of coming down. Anything which helps get these scroungers off the road, has to be a good thing, right?

i think i have to disagree with you there. you shouldent have to have your car insured to sit on your drive. but if you are caught driving without the punishments should be MUCH more harsh!
