General question, but whats the minimum height i need to get the car in the air to be able to get the engine and gearbox out by dropping the front sub frame.

Thinking of doing it this way this time to save time and also gain the experience from doing it in this manner.

I've always taken the gearbox off first and then the engine. and although i find it better when working on my own. id really like to attempt my engine and gearbox change by dropping the front sub frame so i can attach the gearbox to the engine while its out and lower it in, in one go to save the hassle of trying to raise a gearbox off the floor and mount it with the engine.

Reckon it would be easier to block the s/frame engine assy and lift the car!

Think how awkard the assy will be to lower/jack etc.Put it on a trolley of some description and wheel it out when clear.

eh? all i want to do is stick the car on ramps at the front, and lift the engine after lowering the front cross member while the engine is attached to the gearbox as per the service manual. why would i make things more complex by trying to raise the car up and over the engine and having to undo more than what is essentially necessary?

I have limited lifting capabilities as it is lol

unless im just not following what your on about

do you need the gearbox out as you dont need to touch it to get the engine out just unbolt the 4 nuts on the sub frame to lower it jack up the car and lift the engine out.

Ok right, seems people think I have a fully functioning Nissan factory with 4 posters or something, I want to lift the gear box and engine out of the bonnet as it says to do in the service manual, by disconnecting the steering column lower joint, removing the tension rod fixing bolts from both sides loosening the transverse link bolts and lowering it while the engine is on a hoist

Get it up on axle stands on the chassis legs about a 40 - 50cm will do it.the gearbox will dangle and slide through the hole ok with the front crossmember undone and hanging .

cant you remember how we did it last time ian? lol

Think your mixing me up with someone else, we took the gearbox off first if you remember matey

Cheers bud at last someone who understood what I was on about lol

what i did was jack the car up undo all the parts that needed to be done

Exhaust

Prop

Gear Stick/selector

Wires

Starter Motor

Rear Mount

Bottem Steering joint

Bottem engine mounts

dropped the car back on wheels

undo all the top stuff

pipes/wires/balance bars

Rad/fan/pumps/alt/belts

Lift the engine with crain

undo the Subframe

then let the Engine & Gearbox drop and this pushed it down by 4" or so

then Proceeded to take the Engine & Gearbox out at

it just cleared the main slam pannel

how come nobody seems to take it out from the bottom then? (if you have use of a 2 poster)

if you take it out from the bottem then u have more work ..

Sub frame

Steering rack and Pipe work

Wishbones and wheels

PS .. Vod ..

I left Alt/St-Pump/Ac Pump in the car

i think i read somewhere that taking the engin eout from below effects the steering geometry in some way that is very difficult to rectify. i understand what your on about ian you want to know how much clearnace you need under the car to be able to swing the gearbox out attached to the engine. without the back of the box hitting the floor

My advice is to slide the engine with the gear box attached straight into the engine bay!

I have done many nissan engine operations in or out with this method! (sr20det's, rb25det's, vg30dett's & ca18det's)

A little bit of scaraping on the slam panel and bulk head saves many hours of lining up the gear box lying underneath a wet slammed zed32!

Yeah but I'm not breaking this, so want to do it with out damaging anything lol
