Hi. I fitted a replacement S2 climate control ECU and display pod today, but when I press the button to direct the air up to the windscreen, the Auto button lights up too. This doesn't seem normal to me. Also, I can't seem to vary the blower speed - the display doesn't change either.

 

If someone could explain how the S2 system should work I'd be grateful.

Yes sounds like you have a problem. Are you sure you plugged the connectors in correctly on the ecu, they might not be in all the way.

 

you press the defrost button and air should be directed to the windscreen only

Auto can be sent wherever you want via the direction button above the fan speed button, pressing several times gives you different alternatives to where the air is to be flowed.

If you press the rec button you can again pretty much control where air is directed but without the ac unit on.

 

The little tell tale leds (amber/yellow as standard): def on= def led only, auto on= auto led only, direction and fan speed, the led behind the little window will only light behind the button pressed.

OK. Thanks for that info. The S2 pod is behaving like an S1 one, so I think I might have been sold an S2 pod, but an S1 ECU. The fan speed switch and direction controls are acting like the old Hi/Lo fan speed controls. I'll probably need to ask the seller on here for help in getting the right ECU. I did buy it a while ago, but it should work.

The best way to tell the difference is the colour of the sticker on the ecu, the series 1 was blue and the series 2 is green

Hmm, my original S1 has a green label and the supposed S2 has a yellow label. Now I'm really confused LOL!

I havent seen a yellow label ecu, in fact the only one i havent seen the ecu for is the manual aircon buttons pod although i believe it has a black label. Im certain that the green label one is for the series 2, i have one and still have the blue series one in my garage that i took out.

 

I would put the green label one back in that you assumed was for the series one and give it a go.

Hi. This is the label on the original one, which is definitely S1, because the car is a 1990 and came with an S1 pod, which behaved normally.

 

 

This one is the one, which was sold as an S2, but behaves exactly the same as the S1.

I've just been out and tried one, then the other and there is NO difference at all. The Hi/Lo remains the same and the demist still puts both top LEDs on. Looks like they're both S1 tbh. :( If someone does have a pic of a genuine S2, it would be interesting to see the numbers on its label.

Wow! Lots of different number going on here then. I opened the two up to have a look at the internal PCB and the two look IDENTICAL inside. Being an electronics engineer I'd expect some board/component revisions other than just software. One of the numbers on top of each of the 27C256 EPROMS were slightly different, but nothing else. I wonder if anyone has an S2 .bin file out there?

Its normal that when you select air to screen that it also switches on the AC compressor as the system assumes you want demisting asap which the aircon compressor running provides. You can cut it out again by selecting econ again. For the blower fan speeds you cycle the button to select the various settings and this overrides the auto again. Tapping auto at any time sets it back to auto with the compressor running again and fans controlled depending on temperature setting and how different that is from current temperature. Again hitting econ shuts the compressor back off.

OK, thanks for clearing that up. The fact that the blower fan speed isn't cycling through confirms it's an S1 ECU. I bought a known-good S1 pod today and connected it up to the supposed S2 ECU and it runs identically to the S1 ECU and proves that I didn't get a good deal for my £50, albeit 2 years ago! Anyway I've got a good S1 setup for now.

Sorry to revive the thread. Surely the green is Series 1 ECU? Ive got 2x1990 cars and both have green stickered ECUs.
