Some of you may know we moved to an old police station last year, it had been empty for a year and needed gutting and starting again, we had damp and dry rot.

 

We we worked night, day and weekends and had walls back to the brick and cut out joists and lintles, had everything sprayed and treated. Everything was then replastered/decorated etc. We really thought we had turned a corner and had over 60% of the house done and looking stunning. Last week the wife was looking for a shoe she lost and thought the puppy had eaten, we moved our bed to find a dry rot fruiting body coming from under the skirting board in the corner by the ensuite. I pulled off the skirting to find it had returned, maybe from a leak in the shower which a plumber installed had supplied the water to start it again.

 

Well today I started removing the bedroom side of the stud partion wall to find the rot everwhere, I think the whole wall will have to come down and some of the floor boards up. Not only that the entire bathroom/shower is tiled and it looks at least the one wall will have to come down and a £800 shower ripped out. This is going to be a big job and to be honest I'm not sure I have the heart to do it again and we have sunk every last penny into the house and can't afford to rebuild it once we cut everything out.

 

The wife went out this morning in tears when she saw the start of it, when she gets back she's going to see it's a whole lot worse. I also fear the Z may have to go to fund this or at very least there will be no time to enjoy her.

 

Anyway moan over but today I feel sh@t and gutted :cry:

gutted for ya mate, might be worth seeking a bit of advice from a dry rot company, we get a lot oin the old bulding's at work, we cut out, replace and spray with cuprinol 5 star treatment, it prevents it from coming back, some sprays dont prevent, and the one thing we have learnt is lots of ventilation

Having spent four years getting my house into a relatively comfortable state, I can fully appreciate your pain. I could imagine nothing worse than having to go back to the bare walls and start again. I got frustrated with having to re-seal the en-suite shower after the old sealant had gone mouldy again. Nevermind re-doing the whole room!

 

Maybe you could get it fixed up relatively cheap and cheerful - to afford some time to save some cash and check if the problem returns?

I really hope you manage to find a way of sorting it out that doesn't involve alot of money, i know exactly where you're coming from right now so keep your head up buddy and fingers crossed for you :)

we bought out house about 6 years ago and still haven't finished it.... other stuff just keeps cropping up and getting it the way..

 

I started get a problem with the z'd gear box lat month and so thought I'd better sorta out another box... also a prefect time to do a single piece prop shaft.

 

so got the bob and prop only to find out that the flywheel has lost teeth (hence the horrid noise when starting sometimes.. was hoping it was the started and so got another one of those as well)... then when they took it off they check ed the clutch and that too is on its way out.... so.. this little trip to the shop will be costing me over £1300 ....

 

it's hard to feel good about keeping a car that just keeps swallowing money.... especially since it cost me over £6k to start with...

 

and my wife looks at it like... oh well that's the driveway (or carpets or floor in the conservatory) put back a year or so now....

This is why I won't buy a house, I know how much can go wrong with a car, and at the end of the day if it's THAT bad I just weigh the car in, chalk it up to a bad experience and start over, you can't do that with something worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, it's just not possible.

 

Really sorry to hear about your troubles mate, I hope you sort it soon. Our landlord is having a nightmare with this place at the moment, plumbing and stuff going wrong, but at least he's getting our rent money for the house and was his family home before, so I believe the mortgage is already paid off.
