brightFAME Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) Unfortunately I've been bogged down with work and as such been both idle and anti-social when it comes to getting some pictures up of what feels like my new baby :) . I've only had it a week and got a list as long as my arm of project's I want to do so I figure the best way to make up for it and keep track is by starting a journal. This will also be backed up with a few extra pictures on Flikr for anyone interested: So to kick things off I'll start with a few pictures from the day she came to me: Following this the first thing I decided to do after much debate was remove the canards and wing, however looking at the pics now my friend Lee who took all the pictures seems to have made it work :glare: With that in mind my first picture is of the wing off the car, dunno how the zed carried it, the thing is huge!! and the car... please bere with me, I know something needs to go back on and will get to that. Please also forgive the pictures, it's me behind the camera now and my back garden isn't as spacious as Meadowhall car park :( Edited June 18, 2011 by brightFAME Quote
brightFAME Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 That now off I then decided to go with an original 94' spec spoiler. Unfortunately I've no had chance to get it sprayed and bolted on but there was nothing to stop me from taking a quick pic with it placed there :) Moving forward I'm also thinking of some Veilside Type 2 side skirts and maybe dropping the back a tiny bit to tuck the rear wheels just in the arches. While I'm still waiting on time to do this there hasn't been anything to stop me playing in photoshop to get a preview of this done. Pardon my crude skills: Quote
brightFAME Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Concluding the exterior stuff I also then managed to find some time to see about fitting a short shift. After looking through the forum I was able to see 800bhp on ebay had a great rep and for £30 it was worth a punt, so popped in an order on ebay and 24 hours later, on my doorstep: First impressions, flawless service :) This also coincided with my day off work so after picking up on a few bits and bobs and phone calls that should have been made earlier on in the week I set about fitting it. At this point I should make it clear I am no mechanic and the Zed is my first true project car... possibky not one of my best life choices on that basis  Anyhow I cracked on, took a bit of work, little swearing and I discovered its an excellent delt workout but got there in the end, even took a few pics of the work in progress :) and finally, the finished product: All of which now draws to a close this weeks festivities. For anyone interested keep watching, I'll be keeping this up to date Quote

Andy Isherwood Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Always liked Bazza's Pentroof Z!! What a great place to start a project - congrats. Still got the red steering wheel? Any plans for the rear lights? Just drop it a fraction and it will sit better. Heard that single exit exhaust at Japfest last year - sounds great but not sure about the look. Any plans? Andy Quote
brightFAME Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 nice to see you have some taste, congrats on the lady and hope she treats you well. Thanks, I'm glad you think so, I think its far too easy with mods to get carried away and go too far and it would be great to think that other's agree with what I do and it can come across as thought out and with some form of tact :) Always liked Bazza's Pentroof Z!! What a great place to start a project - congrats. Still got the red steering wheel? Any plans for the rear lights? Just drop it a fraction and it will sit better. Heard that single exit exhaust at Japfest last year - sounds great but not sure about the look. Any plans? Andy Thanks Andy. I think it is a great car and as you say absolutely fantastic point to start. Initially i think it needs a little softening down and a few subtle changes to get everything meshing together better. Glad you agree with the drop I think it just made the lines of the car flow better and the same with the spoiler as it runs parallel to the arches. The red steering wheel is still there, not half as bad in person as I'd expected, I'd go as far as to say its grown on me. That said I'm going to be replacing it with a Momo Nero wheel and there is a double din planned for the interior too. As for the rear that is a bit of a problem area for me atm. There are lots of great bumpers out there that look fantastic on there own however I'm unsure how they would sit on the car. I'll need to get a few better pics of the rear and get playing in photoshop. For now the spoiler will make a big difference, lights wise again I'm undecided, I'm going with the tried and tested 99 spec rears however am a little apprehensive about how they will sit on the car. I've also been oodling these: http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/0010_turp_1993_nissan_300zx/photo_10.html The only problem is if I'm to believe the article they're a custom fab jobby which could be a farse and again I'm unsure if they'd suit the car. In all the bill is still out on the rear, it taken me a week to decide the above stuff for the sides and spoiler ha and I'm still anxious to see if everyone agree's it'l be a while before I have any definitive plans for the interior and rear. The last thing I want to do is the obvious, risking sounding a fool I want my choices to be somewhat understated if that makes any sense. Finally the exhaust. Again the bill is out, the sound is brill and distinct, however as you say the issue is find a bumper to work with it, asif the job is not hard enough given the other considerations and also I'm concerned as to whether it would be restrictive over a twin exhaust option... Baz Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Very nice mate, looks like we're gonna hear a lot about it! Are you keeping the canards you removed? and what you really need is to update that ancient series 1 heater control for the modern digital display series 2 one that I happen to have ;) Quote

Loving the subtle drop there too :p whats involved it changing to the digital display though? is it really just a simple swap? I envisaged it would be a little more complicated, if not it'l be going straight on my list :) Quote
Sussex stu Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 great news on your purchase mate, and it will be a journal i will be watching. Baz your funny, cheeky but funny...................... Series one manual control pod, sean dont listen to him, you keep it, dont be fooled.................... Quote

I'd keep the rear bumper if I were you, it's fine. Deffo loose the wheel though, Nero is a nice choice but don't expect it ti last long! As for rear lights, hold fire for a while I have something you may well like!! shhh it's top secret lol!! Tricky one with the exhaust! I guess it's not doing any harm as it is. I've been trying to source and exhaust for two years lol! Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh after your tweaks. Are you going to any shows soon? Andy Quote

Are you keeping the canards you removed? and what you really need is to update that ancient series 1 heater control for the modern digital display series 2 one that I happen to have ;) It's not a series 1 pod. Series 1 are digital as standard. Other than a few very early press release cars the manual controls only came on convertible and series 4 onward cars. Converting to digital is a big job - looms , sensors..etc, not seen anyone do it yet. Edited May 14, 2011 by Yowser Quote
bazza Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Like the car sean..!! She is one of a kind look after her . Enjoying the pictures mate. Dont forget I have the email address of that guy in Germany if you want to sell the bench? All the best Brian. Quote
bobgenie Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Lovely looking car that and looks like you're doing some tasteful changes too. How about an Abflug gated gearchange :) Quote
pbryant_knight Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 The car looks a zillion times better without that big whale fin on the back mate and those things on the front. Good choice to remove them :) Good luck with the rest of your projects too :) Quote

Andy Hi Andy, after a day of tinkering today I think you may be right, once it's been dropped a little on the back I can see that having a big impact and by the time the spoiler and new lights are on the back end is going to look vastly different. If i can I do want to keep the single exhaust, it is different, sounds great and while its on there i can't see another bumper holding it well. The only idea I am toying with is the possibility of an abflug rear diffuser but I'm tentative on the thought, it could easily be too much. I'll hold off doing anything drastic on the lights too, I've got some 99 spec on the way as looking at ebay they seem to hold their value, if they don't work I haven't lost out. Look forward to seeing this project now though, you have my attention! :) As for shows I do want to get to some but I think I'll be holding off until August, keeping the car on the drive and making sure I have it exactly how I want before showing it off. After 3 months of not driving it though I should be attending quite a few, I'll be looking for any excuse to drive it :) It's not a series 1 pod. Series 1 are digital as standard. Other than a few very early press release cars the manual controls only came on convertible and series 4 onward cars. Converting to digital is a big job - looms , sensors..etc, not seen anyone do it yet. Hi Yowser, cheers for clearing that up, sempt a little too easy, if it was a straight swap fair enough but certainly not worth any hassle, I'm quite happy with the standard one Like the car sean..!! She is one of a kind look after her . Enjoying the pictures mate. Dont forget I have the email address of that guy in Germany if you want to sell the bench? All the best Brian. Hi Brian, Glad to see you still on here and keeping track. Yep she's an absolute gem and it's nice to hear you approve of my plans. Thanks for the heads up on the german chap Chris, I've looked him up (his email is in the or sale thread) and he having the spoiler. Lord know what he must have paid for shipping once boxed up the package was huge but I'm sure it'l look great on his car. I think the zed is one of the few cars that can pull such a thing off, seeing it in person I was really impressed and liked it but driving home and seeing it in the wing mirrors I felt like I was driving the bat mobile  Lovely looking car that and looks like you're doing some tasteful changes too. How about an Abflug gated gearchange :) Hi Bob, Thanks, much appreciated. I do like the gated gear change however where the new fill in panel meets with the inset for the original gaitor would right get on my chebs if that makes any sense... let put it down to OCD :P Quote

bobgenie Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I like that, where do you get them from?????? Like what your doing to the car Sean, wasn't a fan of the spoiler so top marks on that. I bought it on here from a member but never put it on and it won't suit my car now so if I can make sure all the bits are still there it'll be up for sale. Don't think anyone else has got one actually :) And Sean, it may well be OCD but main thing is it's your OCD and nobody elses lol Quote
brightFAME Posted May 24, 2011 Author Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) Little update today, my new wheel has arrived: Before: After (pardon the mark on the lens over the EVC screen): Other than that not much change this week aside from a little tweak to stop the door chimes (incredibly irritating) and fixing the electric windows, which turned out to be the little black box on the underside of the window controls. Nice easy fix, would have been even easier had I realized there was a little screw under cloth section of the inner handle and not messed about reaching around the back of the door card for half an hour to remove it  Edited May 24, 2011 by brightFAME Quote
bantambunny Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 That's the steering wheel i really wanted, great choice :) Quote
