Sorry to keep boring you all with this again.

I have just driven my friends 300 again (which I still want to buy but still worried about problems) and it seems not liking anything above 4500-4800 rpm, just doesn't seem to have ANY top end at all. Also it was very hesitant from cold ( I didn't drive it hard for about 20 mins of steady driving), started off fine and with a little more pedal it just seemed to die off all of a sudden. I am still very confused but appreciate all of your wisdom.

Please explain in non tech language what a MAS is.

Also would a dodgy 02 sensor possibly contribute towards this power drain and hesitancy, if so How much are they and from where?

Also something else that has been pointed out is that occasionally there is a very load ticking from the injectors at idle and just above, any suggestions?

Is the picture coming together yet?

If I get this all sorted I would love to come and meet you all at the meet next month.

Cheers for your help,

Paul

The MAS is the Mass Airflow Sensor. A black box near the air filters, from this the ECU can work out how much fuel is needed for the amount of air coming in.

Not sure on your other problems however.

Paul,

The problem sounds like it is fairly serious.

As try said the MAS reading (Mass of air flowing thru the intake) is what the ECU

uses to deliver the right amount of fuel. If this is faulty then the car will not be happy and will be running very lean. Any sign of smoke ??

If the ticking is a Injector (and not a lifter) then this could also be your problem. I suggest you check the Voltage and resitance readings from the MAS and from the Injectors. If you post the readings i will check them out for ya.

Again ECU diagnostics. I think you said it is clear, If so then it it shuodl not be a O2 sensor problem as that would sho up there. Might be worht taking it to Nissan for a Consult Test. My Nissan garage Charged me 25 quid (1 hours Labour) for a full road test inspection and consult test. Very usefull if you are new to the car and worth the money IMO. Getting a Compression test done might also be worth the money!

Also Check for Strong Fuel Smells (when Cold) and smoke from both engine and exhaust.

Also a Peak(maximum) boost guage reading would be helpfull.

let us know how you get on and i might be able to shed a bit more light on the problem.

The Injectors ticking from what I have seen is quite normal. Look for serious engine problems like smoke, oil leaks knocking and rattling sound etc. I would not worry too much about ticking injectors though. The power loss and hesitations could be one or more of a dozen things! It would take all morning to explain them. Go to twinturbo.net and look under their tech and FAQ section. Then look under items such as hesitations, power loss etc. All that you need will be there. It could be something simple like spark plugs!

I suggest that you and your friend spend a day going through the items listed in those sections. Your friend wants to sell it so its in his interest to get the problems solved. Its in your interst because you want to buy it and don't want to be left in the lurch. Also, it gives you the oportunity to find out more about the car and check it over in more detail.

The other option is to take it to a Z SPECIALIST and let them look it over. I know they are nice cars but don't get sucked into it like you would with a stunning six foot scandinavian blond. Check it out first because you might get stung in the pocket (by both). Just as you get her home you find out she has a hairy chest! Not speaking from experience by the way!!!

Where abouts in the UK is the car. You might be able to find a Z owner that will have a quick look for you. I think most have encountered the hesitation problems on many occasions including myself.

Hope this helps,

Andy

If it appears dodgy, leave it alone. There are plenty more out there.

I think a cheap Zed could be a mistake. Spend as much as you can, it will be cheaper in the long run!

I live in Chichester West Sussex, if anyone lives near buy please let me know, that would be very helpful.

We will try all the things listed and get the readings your after.

Thanks to you all for your help once again.

Cheers

Paul :o)

i agree with Simon here, if it's got as many problems as you seem to imply, then i would leave it alone, and keep your friend, rather than have the car and risk tarnishing your friendship over ongoing problems.

There are plenty around, from £6k upwards, so rush decisions are not needed.

I live in Crawley so about an hour or so away (40 mins in a healthy Z !). If you want to bring the car up to me sometime then I'll happily take a look for you and we can compare voltages etc from sensors to get some idea of any possible electronic problems.

In terms of advice, I would suggest that Nico's suggestion of a Consult test is the most cost effective test.

If you'd like to come up to me then mail me on dave@davehairs.freeserve.co.uk

Dave

Cheers Dave,I'll get in touch via e-mail to arrange that if thats OK. I work in Horsham and would enjoy the drive to you anyway. I'll have to sort out the rear fog so I can get it MOT'ed this week sometime.

Thanks again for the offer.

Paul

Have you checked the air filters and the fuel filter for replacement? If they havent been changed in an age they get blocked and restrict air flow or fuel flow. I've had an experience of lack of power at 4500rpm and it was a blocked fuel filter (not the 300 by the way - an injected Opel Manta!)

Good luck!

Craig,

Deep Down we are all Manta Owners lol.

I wonder if Bilks had a Speed stripe and Knight Rider conversion kit ROFLMAO. :O))

Fuel filter has been changed recently but air filters haven't. I'm seeing him tomorow to start going through the list of possibilities (hundreds it seems), hopefully we'll cure it by one of them. I've also managed to borow my mates (other one) Snapon Scanner to interigate the ecu myself, also has actuator tests and a troubleshooter which may help find the problem.

Thanks again for all your help, don't stop your suggestions here I'll just add any new ones to the list.

I nearly bought a Manta but bought a MkII Golf Gti instead which beat the pants off one of my college buddys Manta.

Cheers Again

Paul.

Message to BOB.

I see you deal in GT products, have you had any experience of the pager system that GT are now selling? Just want to know if it's worth having.

Paul

I had 2! An 'A' reg and then a 'C' reg 2.0 l GTE! Cool cars! rear wheel drive! Sigh...

who else has had one then?!!!

Sudden loss of power could mean safety boost. Try switching engine off & restarting. If problem use super unleaded. If engine is not revving at all over 4800 it'll be something else. Maybe loose spark plug connectors, dirty air filter, fuel leak. check under bonnet for all of these.

Thanks COOGS I was wondering about the safety boost, haven't had a chance to see the peak boost yet. Will post as soon as I get it.

Cheers once again

Paul.
