Well I've been watching these pages for quite a while now, trying to learn as much before leaving the BM world and getting my first Z. I'm now in a position where I'm looking to buy, got the cash in hand and its that ever tedious moment while you wait for just the right car to come up.

This all in mind I thought it would be an appropriate time to say hi and since I've a car has finally caught my eye possible ask for a little help. I've seen this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2734220.htm on pistonheads and autotrader and after looking through a few newbie guys have gave the guy a call and to me it sounds ok. Hopefully I'll be able to go down on tuesday to have a look (though its a 150 mile trip each way :S) and fingers crossed it'll be spot on in the flesh. I realize in the photo's the colour looks a little pale but at the same time im hoping its just the usual trouble with yellow cars and them been particularly terrible to photo.

Before could anyone share their opinion with me, does it look good and what watch out for when i look around and test drive it please :)

Welcome :)

The Pearl yellow is a rare colour, an additional cost option for only a few select years. It is quite a pale colour originally, and it does seem to suffer from sun fade - the colour your seeing in the photo's is most lilely not far of its actual tone.

Being a UK car the most important thing to check is for Rust/Corrosion. The most typical area is the sills just in front of the rear wheels.

Check for smoke on idle, under boost and when lifting off. Turbo oil seal problems can be one of the more expensive jobs to sort.

It should rev smoothly without any vibration or judder. They can suffer with Ignition and fuel injection wiring looms problems with age which can intermittently drop the car down to 5 or less cylinders.

Oil leaks near the rear of the engine can indicate turbo feed leaks or rear crank main seal.

Any wobble/weaving from the rear, particulaly when hitting bumps is likely to be worn Hicas bushes or Rear dampners. Not too expensive to sort though.

Things like worn leather seat bolsters, Seatbelts that dont retract properly, peeling Window trims, cracked Windscreen scuttle panels are all very typical of a Z of that age.

A lot of Z's are runnign around in Safety mode without owners realising. Safety mode restricts boost, retards timing and runs richer fuel maps. Severly affecting performance, but if your not used to a properly runnign Z the car can still feel very fast.

There is an old buying guide in the FAQ here : http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=28236

Good Luck. Buy with your head, not just your heart - There are a lot of poor examples out there and the wrong choice can turn out to be expensive.

You wont regret buying a good example :)

Hi thanks for the info, I think you might have just saved me a nearly 300 mile trip with that post as if the colour isn't much more vivid in person then I'll be giving it a miss. As it stands there it isn't for me its just I've seen a few yellow cars in photo where they've looked like they lived in the sun then in person been stunned. It's just a shame at the moment as there doesn't appear to be many good examples on offer hence why I was willing to make the trip.

Also thanks for the clarification on the saftey mode I saw it mentioned in the guide but was a bit unclear as to what actual ramifications it had to the car, certainly something to watch out for, might even be super cheeky when it comes to D-day and put a shout out for a local Z owner to come hold my hand :P

I thought this one was ok when I saw it yesterday, SWB as well

A recent import so rot should not be a problem.

Yours is a UK car so look out for rust

Hi thanks for the share :) I saw that the other day and was ready to pounce on it, however I need a LWB 2+2 so was mortified to see it was SWB :( really nice cars but I need the extra space as minimal as it may be :D

Thanks also to everyone else for their kind words, this already seems a really good and warm forum

Sorry to jack the thread but I don't see the appeal with the SWB. To me (and this is my opinion) they look more in proportion as LWB.

Take your time and buy the right car and at the spec you want, not what comes up for sale at the time.

I kind of done this and it might be biting me on the ass.

Owners used to the lwb think swb's look too stubby , and those with swb's think the lwb looks stretched. It what your used too.

Looks are a very minor reason for picking one over the other though, for swb fans its much more about the way they drive (performance/handling benefits) when you dont need rear seats for kids/dwarves.

Welcome to the club mate!

I actually live about 6 miles from where that yellow Z is being sold - and have even taken a look at it on behalf of another member.........:sweatdrop:

Good luck in your hunt - and if you have any questions about the yellow one feel free to ask......

......as I don't really want to make any comments in an open forum:wink:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
