Unfortunately the inability to read or write is a reality for lots these days. Our literacy levels are higher here in the UK than some other places. NZ for example is absolutely diar!

 

Just before we came back from NZ, our then 14 year old was at the bottom of the class, she had been, in the deputy principles words "been placed on the burger flipper list", which was basically a list that the crap teachers in that school thought couldn't be taught. Now we're back in the UK, she's gone from the bottom of the class to the top third of it in a year, proper schooling, with better teaching and bigger budgets says a lot. Granted our education system isn't brilliant either, but it's better than many others that outsiders who've never been there believe are better.

 

It kills me how many people say they hate this and they hate that about the UK, don't slate it until you've lived somewhere else and seen it first.
