No, the backlash, is it at the same revs in 3rd or 4th?

If it is, then i have the same problem. i have replaced the clutch, propshaft and diff and it makes no difference - it has to be the gearbox input bearing.

You need to replace this or fit a better gearbox........

might go down the manual conversion route in time just bugin me whats causing it

Seems like you have more than one issue, I would start with getting the engine set up checked out as I suspect that may have some bearing on it.

Holding onto 1st gear is usally an incorrectly set tps ( throttle position sensor)

(If backing off the throttle makes it change from 1st to 2nd a bit quicker it definately is the tps) When the "hold" mode is used 1st gear is not used so it pulls away in 2nd hence the reason the long change is gone, also so will be the quick pull away!! good for use in ice conditions though.

Shunting in 3rd and 4th that feels like backlash could be an issue with the gearbox mount or even an issue with the engine, possible high speed misfire / air leak

Get an engine ConZult diagnostic done and a visual inspection for the gearbox mount.

Additionally, mines a manual and I’ve changed the gearbox mount too. Rattles at just under 2000rpm.

It will be a trip to see Jeff and Jamie for a Gearbox swap one day when I can afford to have a NA sub frame and new prop as well, oh and a lightened flywheel.
