Any views on whats been happening lately in Japan ??

Was going to start this with "personally in my opinion"

But, was interested in other folks views ?

Please keep it considered, some of us have kin, either here or overseas !!

Dont soapbox, just your views.

In all honesty i feel for them vary much not only did they have the worst quake in there history at 9.0 but also the tsunami and nuclear problem to contend with, i know through having the odd friend there that they are well drilled in how to deal with earthquakes and tremors but this was one hell of an earthquake, i suppose the main concern now is the nuclear situation and if that can still be resolved without releasing more radioactive materials

I think if anyone has the technology and means to address this it is the Japanese and hope they are doing everything again to prevent just that.

Yeah, I think the nuclear situation is at the top of most folks concern now.

Alan.....

Its mad and I feel for them all too, not only 3 Massive situations to contend with its actually snowing and in minus conditions aswell, I always though Japan was hot, doh!!!

but they will get through this and it will be rebuilt so much safer

after watching many hours of coverage of the appalling situation in japan the thing that amazes me most is the calmness and order that the japanese people are maintaining . japan is a nation built on honour and pride and its people are shining examples for us all .

Awful situation, they deserve our sympathy and support. 2 huge natural disasters and now the imminent threat of a nuclear disaster. Its rather strengthened my views about nuclear energy too. Give me wind farms any day!

Well said Andy that is my thoughts exactly.:thumbup1:

But I must say that this example dose strengthen my views against nuclear energy.

im feel the japaneze people deserve so much repsect, for all this to be thrown at them and not one report of violence, gang warfare, stealing and so forth

i read the other day that they are all living in a baskeball arena and they are keeping it clean, they are all giving each other support, they are forming orderly que's for food

remember orleans when they were packed into the football arena, there was a murder, gang rapes, looting and so forth

one japanese guy even wept on camera for believing what the goverment told them about the reactor's, he blamed himself for the deaths as he believed, he didnt blame the goverment for lying

we should all take a leave out of their book and maybe the world would be a bit better place

and as for the fukushima 50, what an honourable bunch of people, if i died doing what they are doing i would die a very proud person, but they are so humble about it

i really feeel sorry for them, for some their lives will get no better and for that itruly feel very sorry

a friend of mine lives in japan and when he got back to his house there was a boat in his car park :w00t:

Awful and shocking, the earth quake the tsunami's have really knocked it for six. However, this knee jerk reaction about the nuclear plant, to be honest after reading it all for the first time I thought the same "hell fire its the end of everything..." really though after reading some analysis and putting it into perspective its really the least of the countrys issues. Obviously it wants sorting but the radiation "leak" from it is so minor that very few will be affected...

This is quite an interesting article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12785274

In particular this bit.

Radiation does, however, feel acceptable when used in benign circumstances such as medical imaging. You can pay £100 ($160) and get a whole-body CT scan as part of a medical check-up, but it can deliver you a dose equivalent to being 1.5 miles from the centre of the Hiroshima explosion.

Because more than 70 million CT scans are carried out each year, the US National Cancer Institute has estimated that 29,000 Americans will get cancer as a result of the CT scans they received in 2007 alone.

I feel so sorry for the Japanese people. They are dealing with this massive crisis with what can only be described as astounding dignity. The thing that saddens me the most is not the overall picture of the disaster but the little personal stories of people looking for their loved ones. So sad and yet at the same time the have set an example to the rest of the world.

Some interesting comments there and agreed the way they are dealing with it is a lesson for us all, i also agree the nuclear situation is not a total meltdown in the slightest, as in the reactors have been powered down for some time now, unlike Chornobyl that went up under full pelt!!

As much as i feel for Japan, my concern is who's next ? the shit seems to have hit the fan over the last 10 years. I know the news and people are saying its common for earthquakes in these areas etc , but they just seem to be getting worse and worse. so far this year.. and we are only in march, we have had japan , new zealand , floods in australia..... and maybe more that i dont know of......

Alan mate is your daughter ok ?? if ime correct does'nt she live and work out there as a teacher bud

earthquakes have been on the increase for some time i'll be the first to agree with that, also the general size of any given quake seems to have increased the latest one in japan being a mega quake.

This one actually moved earth by 10 inch from orbit The earthquake was also so powerful that it moved the main island of Japan by 2.4 metres!!!. According to experts it will have profound to subtle effects on the length of the day and the passage of the seasons.

av heard from one of the three guys i was bunking with from a seminar a while back..id like to say he's okay but his parents home is wrecked...homeless prtty much still waiting to here from the other too

wish i could go over and help somehow

am gutted for everyone overtheyr..if it happend here i dont think we;d be so dignified about it

There's a few types of Radiation. Alpha, Beta, Gamma radiation and X-rays.

Alpha Radiation consists of very heavy particle and it cannot penetrate the skin.

It is harmful if ingested or enters through an open wound so a set of coveralls and a face mask is perfect protection from this type.

Alpha Radiation comes from elements like Thorium or Uranium. and is an ejected Helium nucleus.

When you see people getting hosed off, this is what they are getting rid of.

Beta radiation is a light, short range particle and can penetrate the skin.

If material contaminated with Beta Radiation stays on the skin, it can cause long term damage. Also, breathing it in is a very bad thing.

Wickes coveralls and a face mask help with this one too.

Beta Radiation is an ejected Electron from Strontium or Tritium.

This is the sort of stuff that Radioactive Fallout is composed (or irradiated) by.

Now, the really nasty stuff.

Gamma and X-Rays are Ionizing Radiation.

The particles will pass through clothing, skin or whatever at high speed and collide with the atoms inside your body.

By doing this, they strip an electron away. Your cells are made from atoms, hence the damage caused.

You need to be either far far away or have some suitable lead shielding for protection.

Gamma Rays vary in their energy depending on the strength of the Radioactive Source and are produced by elements like Caesium-137 or Cobalt-60.

Last of all, there's Neutron Radiation.

Neutron radiation is of non-ionizing radiation that consists of free neutrons. These neutrons are emitted during nuclear fission like in the Japanese reactor.

Nuclear Radiation does not ionize atoms in the same way that charged particles such as protons and electrons do (exciting an electron), because neutrons have no charge.

But, neutrons react with the atomic nuclei of many elements upon collision creating unstable isotopes can induce radioactivity in a previously non-radioactive material. This process is known as neutron activation and that's why the area around Chernobyl is still a no-go area.

This is what will be pumping out of the overheating reactor cores causing the high radioactive readings in the immediate vicinity.

You can't shield this with lead. What does shield you from neutron Radiation is water, which is why the rods are kept underwater when used and you see choppers trying to drop water on the thing (as well as cooling the core to slow the reaction down)

I'm well aware of the types of radiation? Still doesnt stop people blowing a small risk well out of proportion!
