Engine Question

Hey Guys,

My belt at the front of the engine is squeaking and was wondering whats the best fix? Also on the right bottom side there is another pulley but it look likes its disconnected (no belt on it) is that the AC unit part?

Featured Replies

right bottom as you look at the engine, is the A/C clutch and pump, there should be a belt on there, but could be disconnected as the clutch has seized up, also with a squealing belt, best thing to do would be replace the belt and do up to the correct tension.

Weird it has no belt on it at all, but driving is perfect. Btw i do have an automatic! Yeah my main belt whatever its called going to change it. Any ideas as to cost and work involved?

right i think your getting confused. if you look down by the big white fan, the vicous fan as its known you will see thre 15mm or so black smooth belts. these run off a pulley down in the bottom under the fan. you will see this spinning when the engine is on. the three belts run off of this these are known as anncilry belts they run things like the alternaor, power steering pump, air conditioning etc. on the right hand side you will see there is a pulley. this is the air con compressor. if there is no belt here its probally because the compressoir has siezed try turning it by hand when the engine is off obviously! it probally wont move. so many people detached it rather than replace it. with me so far?

this is why you only have two belts. as long as these are in good condition, no freying etc or excesivily warn down, and are of the correct tension so they dont slip, and squeal. then your ancileraies will hopefully do there job :D

the main belt. i assume you mean timing belt is safely hidden behind the black platic that covers teh front of the engine. you can undo a few bolts to peak in there and see how bad or maybe good it is.

if youve just brought the car i cannot recommed highly enough taking your car to zedworld, they will do a full health check of your car and advise you on what needs doing for a very fair price. most of the members here will also recommend thier services. best of luck.

thanks a lot z32bolt :D, that cleared it up for me. Is my fan belt that is squeaking, well thats what it sounds like, so need to get that changed. I thought as the car had full nissan service history, they would have changed the cam at 60k or so. However going next week for a full check up by jeff :)

Wow the noise is annoying and very embarrassing, does it matter if i go to a specialist to get the belt done?

you can do the belt yourself more than lkily. or a local garge could... do it. i know most guys wont trust there cars anywhere other than a few places but to tighten the belt is another thing. its simly a case of slankening the belt off repositioning it so its tight then, bolting it back in place. do a sreach its not a big job at all. have you inspected the belts to check if its loose or worn??

hmm i am new to this car i would probably get it done by a mechanic. I am going to take a proper look now as its was dark when it started squeaking. Anyone know any good mechanics near london? or is there anyone near london that can give me a hand? :D

Ok had a quick check, the belt that goes from water pump to altenator, is pretty loose. I just pressed it down and there was hardly any tension in it at all. The belt seems pretty new though!
