Hi All

I recently acquired a 300zx non turbo auto 1990 on a swop. Since then the car has developed a problem – third gear is now Missing In Action,:detective: it just slips.Oil and levels are good.

I don’t really want to go down to manwell conversion route.

So has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be wrong and where to start looking?

My forth never selected so I changed the fluid. All ok now but have recently learned the box is a three speed with overdrive lol anyway the fluid change worked. Worth a try for £20 as my fluid was dirty much smoother now as well.

Common sign of a failed auto box  the gear selection is usually good but the third speed clutch has failed which is usually due to contamination, infrequent fluid changes been the most common culprit.

If you don't want to go manual, you can pick up an auto box pretty cheap, there are a few for sale on here at the moment, check the for sale section.

But as mentioned above, a couple of fluid changes and a good clean of the filter might get it working. I did and got a good few miles out of her before the box gave up for good.

do a couple of searches mate, quite a common problem and lots of advice to be found.

Lets see some pics of your new motor :thumbup1:

Argh!..I've just had this same problem which has started yesterday..1st, and 2nd is fine..doesn't want to know 3rd, let alone 4th!..no idea on what to do!?..I wish I had the space and a ramp to get underneath the car..Will pop it into a local mech I guess for a gear oil change and clean as advised in this thread..if not how bad is it to get a replacement auto box fitted?

I'm collecting a car on friday with the same issue, will let you know how I get on. Can I just ask what sort of speed you can sensibly do in 2nd gear?

Same thing happened to me Jooles. Lost 3rd, stayed in 2nd. Mucho fuel consumption.

Two considerations. If your planning to keep the car or sell it.

Sell: Into a gearbox specialist and get 3rd sorted.

Keep : Into the same specialist for a full refurb.

I chose the latter as mine has been a labour of wallet. Had a full refurb on my auto gearbox, not cheap, but with a 2yr warranty? It'll do for me.

I'm sure if you put a thread for a gearbox in the 'Items wanted' section you'll be spoiled for choice. Although you'll be looking for one that's sorted anyway. Sure, you'll be tempted by some of the low prices, but what will you do when you've one of those? You'll no doubt want take it to that gearbox specialist fella.........................................yeah.

Sort the one you've got. Your Zeds worked with it in the past, it'll work with it just fine in the future. they know each other already. Enjoy your car.

Happy hunting Jooles and good luck.

Amendment.

Loss of third gear, over drive and torque lockup means a gearbox recondition is on the cards, fluid changes only works if all drive is lost and the filter is blocked so hence no fluid pressure / drive.

Dubberdean, seriously you will need a new box or rebuild, so I hope you have budgeted for that, and to answer your question you can reasonably do 60mph in 2nd gear as its a taller gear than in a manual, but not good on fuel and not nice for the engine on a long drive.

Jeff - dubberdean lives near me and was going to have my spare auto box from a TT - will this fit an NA?

Phisically yes ,however there are internal differences and the software within the ecu is different but the ecu can be swapped over, the torque convertor stall speed is different too, the gear changes tend not to be so nice due to the ratio differences, from experience fitting a TT box into an N/A may not be reliable in the long term, having said that sure someone said they did it and they found it ok but cannot comment on that.
