Found out last night that my place at Uni had been withdrawn as the local strategic health authority has pulled the funding. Cue a lot of panic and a very sleepless night last night.

Anyway for some reason, the whole cohort of students ready to start the diploma in Sept have basically been told its a no go.

So now I have 2 choices, either do the degree programme (prob better in the long run career wise but much much lower funding and will have to rely on student loans) or put off starting til January 2012.

Big decision to be made here. Very stressful 24 hours!

Sorry to hear that Janus,

Can't really offer any advice, but gutted for ya

I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

Best of luck

Oh no, how can they do that to people? That is a disgrace, you have made sacrifices in order to start your course, if you can possibly do it, my advice would be to do the degree programme, I know it's a big decision for you to have to make due to student loans and things, but as you say, I think it would turn out better for you in the long run. I would not like to be in your position right now. The job you are in at the moment, will they let you stay on there until January 2012? Hope this is a little help, but ultimately you have that big decision to make.

Thanks guys. To be honest it depends if I can afford to live on the much lower bursary and loans. After all I have Tasha to provide for so I can't just willingly take considerably less money. I would like to do the degree but I'd opted for the Diploma because of the funding. Also worried that if I decide to hang on til January, the funding could get pulled again and then I'm buggered.

Just really didn't want student debt if I could avoid it, it took me ages to pay off the lot from my 1st degree. Frustrating thing is I applied to start this month but the course was already full hence having to wait til Sept.

Argh!

Sorry to hear this Jane, seems that people are just being screwed around with at the moment. I hope you get this sorted out in your head.

Sorry to hear it too, nearly happened to me but somehow the training provider squeezed a couple more places out of the government so I got away with not paying. Sorry you arent so lucky :(

Thanks again - I am still no closer to getting a definitive figure as to what grants/bursaries/loans I will be entitled to if I accept the offer of the degree place. So hard to find the info, feeling utterly frustrated with it all today :taz:

Sorry to hear this. My partner works at a Uni with me and her job is under threat after their degree course got pulled. If you can I'd try for the degree, but that's not cheap these days and you don't want to be selling the Starlet to fund it. Let's hope you can get some backing.

Cheers Dave, sorry to hear about your Mrs job

I spoke to the finance and welfare officer at the Uni today, and it seems I would be entitled to extra help because I've got a 4 year old, and Marc's also a full time student, so I think I will be able to accept the offer of the degree place and start in September.

Thanks, still waiting for the letter from Uni to officially pulled the course and offering me the degree place instead. Still a bit scary jacking in a permanent job but I actually can't wait to get started. I am already a walking medical encyclopedia (so I am told lol), can't wait to start using my brain again and getting my career back on track.

That sounds promising and by the time you finish the degree, hopefully the country will have more jobs on offer!

I was actually part way through my diplomas when they pulled the funding on me, was ironic, I went back to uni/college to do a diploma in something I already knew how to do, so that when I had it, I could get paid more. The tutors wouldn't let me do my exams straight away, said I had to sit the two year course through, even though I was bored stiff and having to take time off my full time job to do it. I persevered though, and Blair thanked me kindly by pulling my courses funding with 2 months notice. Then, the tutors changed their tune, "oh Alex, you should take the exams now and get out of here before it's too late" ---- WTF Yeah, THANKS!

Long story short I ended up doing a 2 year advanced diploma in software engineering, IT Principles and Systems analysis in 6 months :D lol - Got distinctions too :P
