When I bought my Zed I was led to believe it had a straight cut box, so I went looking through the receipts and came across this -

Gearbox.jpg

Now is it me or does this look like the most unconvincing receipt ever :/ Looks made up to me

The box does whine 1st-4th like a straight cut box and then quiet down in 5th tho!

Have you called the company? to see if thier receipts look like that? Likewise they should have a record somewhere of the work being done, or of the invoice/receipt being issued/printed.

Worth a try i reckon.

likwise that it Vodkashots' (one of the mods) neck of the woods - he might be able to tell you about the company?

Haven't called them actually may give them a bell later and see what they say! I had never actually heard fo the company till I read the receipt.

Dude its 7 years old invoice any work done is well old by now

Yea I know the work is old but the car has done very few miles since then. Just wanted to know for piece of mind if the car has had that done to it or not.

Hopefully the VAT number is at the bottom of the page out of shot because if it is not they have committed a serious offence by charging Vat without showing their Vat number.

Nope there's no VAT number Jeff :/ Becoming more dubious about it lol

zen performance is a pretty reputable company

be pretty wierd they didnt include a vat number in a recipt

plus the test sheet should be on a seperate piece of paper..in my exp anyway

Some information from Companies House for you - and I'm not breaching any data protection laws here because a limited company's record filed at Companies House is available to the public upon request.....

Zen Performance Ltd; company number 05081497

Registered on 23 Mar 2004.

I won't post anymore though; but it is possible that, judging by the invoice date, the company was originally a non-incorporated body which became a limited company around the time that work was invoiced.

Jeff's right about the VAT; however if Zen switched to a limited company it's possible that they were in the process of registering for VAT with the new company. Knowing they would be above the VAT threshhold as soon as they started trading, they would be accountable for VAT right away.

In that instance it is legal to charge VAT during the process providing they state on the invoice something like "VAT registration in progress - VAT number to be advised" or the like......

To continue regarding your gear box - as Martin says, it was 7 years ago. And whilst you say it has not done many miles in that time, there is no mileage declared on that invoice. So who's word are you taking for that...?

If the 'box is whining, might I suggest getting the car to Jeff's for a transmission oil change? That might be all it needs - especially if it hasn't been done since the rebuild.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I got some invoices like that matey, but not from zen performance........

And my manual box whines like a biatch too.......

Ye it's not like a worn gearbox whine it actually sounds like a few track cars I've heard with straight cut boxes. There's no problem with selecting gears etc. I actually love the noise it makes :)

I think we may have a high spec box here guys, and i too luv the whine, sounds racey....

> what does straight cut box mean

Transmissions with straight cut or spur gears are mostly used for race/rally applications.

they can stand more power and have less transmission/power loss, but they will produce a lot more noise then transmissions with helical gears (like a standard gearbox).

example of how a gearbox with straight cut gears sounds like:

are we talking a whine in 1st and 2nd when its cold? thought it might be diff, but after reading this it sounds like it might be the gears! normally i dont like a car making too many chirrups and whistles, but it does make it sound like a track car, which i love!

When it's back on the road in the next few weeks I'll get a video of it up and you can hear for yourself. I've had cars with whiney boxes due to worn gears/props etc. but this doesn't sound like that!

*Edit* by that I meant it doesn't sound like something worn lol.

Clunks into 1st etc. just lessens it's whine in 5th for cruising, it also has a heavy switch-like clutch that makes it feel gooood :p

That would fook me right off on a good journey

Normal zed boxes shoudnt wine.

I would say 99% its not a straight cut/dog box as 7 or 8 years ago you would struggle to get one for the 300zx, in fact i only know of ppg that do one for it and i'm not sure they did that long ago!! you would know if it was a dog box as they are really really noisy!! i would imagine if its a manual box it was just rebuilt and they have beefed it up on the invoice to charge more?
