I've just picked up a set of Japspeed hard pipes to replace the standard rubber intake piping, I spent about an hour trying to fit them yesterday and cannot for the life of me get them on, they seem about 5mm too long.

My current thinking is to try and shorten them a fraction, I'm just wondering if there's a reason I shouldn't do this? Or if anyone has another suggestion?

Returning them isn't an option as I bought them second-hand (but unused) at a great price.

Yeah, the problem is the actual metal pipes seem physically too long to fit in between where they need to go. I tried removing the rubber end bits to see if the pipe would fit in the gap, but it doesn't as it's too long.

Shortening it by a few mm would probably work but I'm mainly wondering if there's a reason I shouldn't do this? Another option I guess would be if the pipes had a bit more of a curve to them? Does that make sense?

stupid question, I'm sure your not, but the right and left/top and bottom pipes are all different, you are putting them where they should go? :)

Nope good question as the engine is slightly angled, it's left and right often can be wrong.

In any event with the couplers off the pipes should be about 5-10mm away from any connecting pipe.

Once you've done this, to fit them just leave the couplers for 10mins in a bowl of HOT soapy water.

Doing 1 pipe at a time, slide a coupler on either end all the way, slide on 4 hose bands losely. Place new pipe where it needs to go, push 1 coupler over and tighten, push 2nd coupler down and tighten, then tighten the remaining 2 hose bands.

Do the same for other 3 pipes, ensuring the outer ones are correct as the angles may differ.

if you were going to shorten them i would be very carefull, first off you dont want any sharp edges, secondly they should have a swage at each end, this is to stop the pipe from popping off, you would need to roll a new one

lol I did think of that! I've tried all different combos. The two central pipes are fine (going to the throttle bodies), but the other two are too long to fit.

As you say Dougal, there is a swage at the end, cutting them would remove this which would be a problem. I'll try and get a photo and upload, might make it a bit clearer. I asked Japspeed and they suggested asking on here.

Put the couplers in boiling water let them expand then dry them off and fit quickly and they will go straight on

See pic, might make it a bit clearer. The pipe won't go into position any better than in that pic. The other pipe also won't go, I've tried that. I have a feeling that there may not be a solution to this other than to shorten the pipe? Hopefully it's just me being retarded and there's a simple fix.

I assume it's not possible to move either of the connecting pipes (the black ones)?

There made by hand most proberly so every one will differ slightly. My ebay ones were to long so i just cut them,

Better than the Z1 motor sports there over 1" shorter than the ones pictured and there a royal pita to fit

I'll trim them down then!

Are the black hard pipes you connecting on seated properly. I just loosened them down by the turbos, placed a piece of wood on top and tapped them down with a hammer.

That did cross my mind. How easy are they to access lower down?

Do you mean the ones that run along the side of the engine, or that come up from the bumper?

Didn't Gaz (hellraiser) fit these recently? thought he put a thread up and am sure he had to cut them.

Ive seen this numerous times and im afraid its chopping time as thats the only way some hard pipe kits will fit. Most are copies of each other it seems as why would you make something that doesnt fit? i always use wd40 to fit the silicone pipes, they slip on easy and can be moved into the right position.

Finally got these fitted, had to trim about 1cm off each end of each pipe.

Thanks for all the help anyway!
