Hi folks, haven't posted on here for some time due to selling my Zed in mid 2009 but like visiting frequently as the banter is always fresh.

Anyway was browsing the internet to see what 300zx's were for sale these days when i came across my old car on ebay.....CLOCKED. I sold it in the summer 2009 on a private sale with 97000 miles and couldn't believe it when i saw it for sale with 78000 miles!

Just thought i would post it on this forum as i was a member here with that car and just incase any member was to but it or think of buying it its true mileage will probably be over the 100,000 mile mark by now.

Sad to think some people do this to cars like 300zx's,espcially when it throws the likes of timing belt schedules right out the window.

Cheers

Ronnie

just a thought, but is the seat and the gearstick top as you had it (since they look great compared to the steering wheel) have they tarted it up/ hidden something?

my point is that they could claim an 'admin error' for the ad mileage whilst actually be selling it displaying the real 100k+..we all know they do this cos it gets punters on the forecourt.- don't try hanging them until you know for sure it's happened. :)

again..just a thought!

The seat and gear stick were in good condition compared to the steering wheel, when i bought the car the previous owner had caused the wear on the wheel,it was peeling slightly and got worse when the car sat in strong sunlight and got warm inside?

Totally agree with it possibly being an admin error, there is a good chance the trader won't know nothing about it,its probably been done before the trader got it,i have reported to ebay so that they can find out if it is a typing error and if the mileage is 78000 then they can alert the trader that it is incorrect.I've heard that its not illegal to clock a car etc but the new owner should be notified

Ron

it'll be hard to track who done it, def report it, the guy selling it now might not of done it, if he didnt hopefully he wont get a bad nane for it,

It was? lol your memory is better than mine. It was a tatty E46 i remember it was a cheapie... I never got on with that forum right load of funny buggers do you not think??!

Most were ok, but then there were loads of numptys.

Ive been on there a while..

Well, i sure wish i'd joined this forum before putting a deposit on this car :(

Paper work appears to back up the mileage so theres maybe been some fiddling done on it :(

gutted.

Wayne.

Car still looks good though but dont think its really worth 2495 if its not a genuine car.......

when I bought mine, the odometer wasn't working, soon found out it was because the cogs had all been super glued together so they didn't turn... Not bothered tho, it's fully re-built and brand new now :)

yeah there is that aspect of it, my only gripe now is the price really as i'd happily pay £2495 for a low mileage genuine car, but for a clocked one?? it could have done 9,000,000 miles for all i or any future buyers know.... :(

could just drop a tt in it in a year i suppose but then its still a lot of money for a project......dilema :(

Blackpool, have you only paid a deposit ?

If so, and its at a dealers, just tell them what info has come to light and you want a full refund of the deposit (or a suitable adjusted price on the car, whichever you prefer).

I can't see any honest dealer having a problem with that ?

very true point, id be happy with a reduction in price to relate to the unknown mileage to be honest as the car looks ok to me.... :)

thanks for the advice guys :)

If the car in question is running spot on and it looks good, then there should be nothing to worry about.

When the car came into the country it proberly had about 50k already knocked off.

These engines can do hundreds of thoushands of miles, plus with it being an N/A it will go on forever. just need to do the belts and a full service etc :)

as car mad says probably came in clocked. the place where i got my car always sells its imports with roughly the same amount of miles on it may just be coincidence but who knows. unless you own the car from new think it would be hard for anyone to say that the millage is 100% spot on. as long as the car is running good id go for it

Just to echo the sentiments of those posting above, most 300zxs with under 100k miles (especially imports) will by now have probably been clocked.

There are a few genuine low mileage UK spec cars out there; but they should only be believed if they have been through few owners and have comprehensive full service history and all the old MOTs and bills to back it up. With no gaps......

But when a car gets to a certain age, mileage really becomes irrelevant and one should buy it based on its over all condition. Especially as a 150k mile car might well have had many major components replaced during the course of its life - whereas an 80k mile car most likely hasn't.

Consequently the 150k miler could well prove more reliable as the 80k miler will soon start needing expensive parts replaced as they begin to fail.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

wise words Richard

Ronco,

just trying to clear up the mileage with regards to cambelts now,

did you have the car in 2005 when it had a new cambelt? and if so, what was the mileage please??

transpires its had a speedo change and that the 78000 may actually be 7800 as the last mot mileage was 1443 miles, thats what it says on the mot cert...........

I think only the seller can choose whether to make the question & answer visible to all. :shifty:

its shite that it happens, I bought an RS Turbo 9 years ago which had done 97,000 miles. Had a folder with £10k+ of receipts, but when I decided to go through them one day there were records from 5 years before with 150,000 miles on. :(

probably the mot tester assuming it done 150,000 miles as im sure the mk3/4 escorts were a 5 digit clock, so it probably read 50,000 and the mot guy thinking its gone round the clock.

as for you blackpool, if its in the condition its advertised at i think its worth every penny anyway, unless you have full jap history its morre than likley a high miler anyway. I wouldent worry about it too much, and richard make a very good point too! Mine apparently has only done 40,000 miles, it is very clean for a car made in 1989! but i still doubt its a 40,000 mile car.

oh and another thing, i know several chaps who keep cars/vans for years and clock it every year before the mot, so when it comes to selling it, it tends to look like a low miler, and all the paperwork will show that too, So evem with all old mot's you cant be 100% sure. as always, just go by its general condition/looks/feel.
