How crucial is the fan shroud? can I remove it and leave it off?

As above really, just wondering if leaving it off would make a differeence in cooling, I want to leave it off for asthetics really, not too bothered if it goes back on, but overall I dont want to fry the donkey:wink:

i have run mine for a while no without the shroud and all appears to be fine touch wood

Not been one on mine for 10 years mate.

I use Apexi gauges and it never gets above 82 when pushed but averages 78normal driving.

Excellent, cheerZ lads, it stays off then!!, just need a chrome Viscose fan now, anyone ever seen one?? :thumbup1:

I remember a thread where someone remove the fins on the standard shroud, smoothed it down and painted it. Looked fantastic. Could be an idea.

Thank god for that! Why not paint it - black maybe? Is it something you want to make a feature of

I took my shroud off the middle of last year. seems to run a little warmer when stationary but other than that, no difference.

I think painting it will not last long!! it flexes a lot and they all have cracks in them anyway, i do want to make a feature out of it as its the only thing that ruins the look of the engine at the moment, imo, chrome would be the daddy, my mates having a look tommorrow to see what he can manufacture for me, but its looking doubtfull as it will all need balancing ect

got your text by the way, will drop off for you, unless you wanna come round and snag my handy work :sneaky2:

i could pop round now if your up, or tomorrow sometime???? and talk you out of the nasty chrome fan!!!

No probs let me know when your in. Anyway back to the topic - someone else tell him a chrome fan is crap :hammer:

looks shody and half finished imo. Plus it hides all the belts and pipes etc if your going for the smooth look

Paint it the same colour as the throttle/cam covers. Won't the flexible stuff they mix with the paint for bumpers etc do the job?

BTW, your engine bay looks the nuts. Top job mate.

CheerZ Daffy, still lots to do on it yet, got to paint the strut brace bracket orange on the inside, finish off around the rad and polish the plenum again!!! ahhhh I hate polishing!!!

Sorry to say Daz but the chrome fan will look poo!:tt2:

I cleaned mine (with Jif IIRC) and got it all nice and white again, looks as good as 'owt!:chinese:

Now there's an idea :shifty:

do it orange

some of the old yank stuff have metal fans, you may need a custom converter making but could soon polish one of them up.

How about smooth the shroud and then wrap it with the carbon film thats being discussed on the forum at the mo? I've got it in the Beemer and it looks the dogs *****x. I'll show you when i see you next.

Ewwww, No, I`m not into that fake carbon stuff
