Well it all boils down to efficiency i suppose. these cars just are not efficient enough. they are losing something somewhere. weight would play a big part at 1.5ton its a heavy car to get moving. then you have things like ware and tear and age. plus you have to work with friction as well. most of us stick hoofing wide tires on, then it would all boil down to how well the bearing systems are. im sure for a engine to turn something a lot of torque is required. that would translate into how much work the engine has to do.

The E36 is lighter. and the E46 m3 is made with efficiency in mind. though i could be miles off

just have the zed as a toy, an get a tdi for work an run a bout, i got a 306 dti an its cheap as chips to run

Interesting to read what everyone has put. At least we all admit the expencive to run.

I have almost every sensor new so just waiting for mapping as i know im overfueling slighty.

As for mr Bean well you should be botherd because by the time you get your car up and running the planet will be like mad max and escape to the thunder dome or what ever it called :lol:

The z will easily do 25+ on a motorway run, and I've seen 30mpg+ average several times over a long run, although I used to always average in the low 20's for mixed driving, but dropping a fair bit if having too much fun.

its about equal to any similar performance cars in my experience - supra, gtr ...etc

yeah will have to see if john can work his magic for me. not to happy with 14mpg lol

me either when other people with the SAME CAR can get near double. :-(

Yeah i managed that but that was booting it lol!!!

is yours still an na

I think its such a shock to me because ive been driving the vec for the last 9 months and sunday was the 1st proper drive in the zed.

So any ideas why they are so bad? how can other cars be so good etc :red_indian:

I had a faulty o2 sensor thats why ;)

ok report back in 2 days then lol

More like 2 min :lol::lol:

Thats how. Real time info direct from diagnostics port on a pda ;)

Sack having that i would rather not know. would be waiting for somthing to go wrong all the time lol!!

I reckon a good 80-90% Z's are running around with either faulty o2 sensors, or with other related fueling issues.

With all the ecu diagnostic scans I've done in the past you can almost guarantee finding at least 1 o2 sensor not reading as expected.

i like that!!!

dan.

lol at working out mpg's in a 300ZX.

I have no idea what my mpg's are, I fill it with fuel and when it gets low I fill it again, not interested in finding out what the cars mpg is.

I've also got a Nissan Qashqai and an old primera, now I'm all over the mpg's in those because they're my daily drivers, the zed only gets out at weekends and then when the weathers nice and I fully expect to blow a tank of motion lotion when it does get out.

haha/..ooh lordy, I could write a book on this cos I used to do it for a living, but just to stick a few more ideas into the mud.. 1)Nissan fear 'knock' and throw fuel at the problem. only V.recently could anyone measure knock at top revs. 2)O2 sensers learn (incl your driving style) and react slowly over time to changes. You can simply reset the learning if any doubt. 3)to calc MPG Cars are driven thru a very strict drive cycle with little error/variation so are comparable..yet we drive like________on_____with some____ and no______!!! hahahaha.

in basic overview, i dont think we actually care what the MPG figure is, its more the range you can do to a tank of fuel thats the concern. under 200 is bad, when most get 300+.

the thread should be titled 'how far on a tank of fuel' :-)

Then i think others can apprecaite our concern, and for us using the Z as daily drivers (as they should be) it does become annoying.

how many liters can a tt zed tank hold?

dont know as i never went there...

Also there is no comparison between Auto box Vs Manual. Manuals will always triumph big time. Only one person mentions there type in this thread.

and anyone non-turbo with aftermarket air intakes are going to suffer.

I'd be most interested in what spark plugs everyone has. It matters. (running temps/makes) eg the (recommended but..)non standard Bosch on the 350Z are more prone to mis-fire.....ooh god I'm wittering on like a drunk Uncle at Xmas, sorry.

One has to remember that the basic engine design predates the car itself. Whilst the Z32 was conceived over 20 years ago, the engine was based on that used in the previous incarnation - the Z31.

Sure it was fettled a bit to bring it in line with the standards of the day; but add 2 turbos and it will drink faster than a medical student at happy hour in the union bar!!

Modern engines have come on in leaps and bounds with economy - you only have to look at the latest German machinery to see that. The bigger, powerful BMW and Merc petrol engines are prime examples of how things have improved over the years. The 3.5 litre in my SLK churns out 305bhp but the car can still average 28mpg with very "spirited" driving! Back in 1990-1995 your top of the range 2 litre petrol sports family car (eg Cavalier SRi or Mondeo Si et all) would barely top that average; with equal "spirited" driving!

I remember having a 6 month old Cav SRi back in 1991 and being quite chuffed to see 30mpg.......

It's just progress! In another 10 years, we may still probably still be driving cars that run on fossil fuels; however the engines will be more powerful litre for litre but will run on even less fuel. Maybe:online2long:

Richard:yes:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
