Overheating Cats

On the way home from helping out zhoodyx on removing his heater matrix

my cat warning light came on a few times.

I slowed down and the light went off again but i wasn't doing more than

70 and didn't floor it at all at anypoint on the way home.

Later on i nipped out to pick up a chinese and the car felt really raspy and

felt as if it was choking at idle when i stopped at traffic lights.

You think that my cats are on there last life or could there be something else ?

Don`t panic matey, the cat light comes on when unburnt fuel gets into the cat and lights up in there, it can also comes on if there is a cable fault on the sensors, often these are cut and connectors fitted when the exhaust is removed for any reason.

However if you feel the engine is different its more likely that its excessive unburnt fuel. This can be caused by a misfire or and the most likely in your case a bad connection on the temp sensor which will lead to an overfuel situation, the reason the light goes off when lifting off the trottle is that the injectors switch off on overrun so hence no fue.

Assuming you do not have a misfire from a bad ptu or coil connection then check the temp sensor connection its the one on the water inlet pipes at the front, the larger two cable one.

I recently done a plenum swap too and when the top was off I split the harness

so i could do a cable tuck; most the plugs were damaged connector wise on there

clips but doing the tuck puts a little tension pulling the plugs downwards and they

all seem to stay on fine enough; maybe i need to double check everything just to

be sure !

Checked all the cabling and took the zed out to work today and its still spluttering !

Not sure if its a missfire { what does that sound like on a zed ?}

Anyways when trying to accelerate i get a drain in power as if the engine id getting

choked in some way then it will just come to life for about 30sec or so then do the

same.

i've filling her up with premium from my local garage so dont think it a fuel issue.

Going to book her into get an oil change this week just incase.

When i got the tops of the rocker covers powder coated they were covered in a

sandy residue inside, i hosed out and wire brushed it all out but i'm hoping i got

it all.

Car has been running fine for the last month or so then suddenly this happened.

Just a thought...

Take out all of your coil packs one at a time and check the rubber insulation very carefully. Any signs of splits etc and this could be your problem.

I had a similar problem, cat light came on and would loose power. Turned out to be a split rubber that was allowing it to earth out within the socket!

Problem resolved !

Double checked all the cables before the trip home and found that there was a loose

injector cable hiding under the drivers side of the balance bar, broken clip on it so it

must have shaken loose by the engine vibration.

Headed off home just after 5:30 and she purred all the way !

Thanks again for the hints and suggestions !

 I win....:thumbup1: glad u got it sorted .. Go to a scrap yard & get some connectors of a ford KA they fit nice ;) there is other fords that fit too
