Hi all, i will be recieving a HID kit from santa this year and he has asked which one should he get me?:w00t:

Which kit and where to buy from is the best?

Is it H1 H3 or H4 for the dipped beam?

What K rating and wattage is best?

cheers....

i think its between 5k and 6k for a good white look, any hotter than that and it goes into the range of blue which is illegal

needs to be H3 i think bud, and the K rating spectrum represents what colour the light will be. 6000k = white lower = Bluer and higher = yellower..... i think.

all aftermarket hid kits fitted to non hid headlights are illegal now

Might be illegal as stated in the kit (for off road use only) but I'm yet to see anyone on here fail the MOT due to it.

yer as if it would stop me putting them on, cant wait to get rid of the candles that light my way during these winter nights.

iv failed an mot twice with hids on my altezza and my a4 but its due ti angling as theyr all over the place bright

the stock lights in these things r pretty pants id say i have to use my foglights to get decent light.

The legality of HID conversion kits is and always has been questionable.....

......but as the Z32 has projector beams for the dipped lights, the beam pattern of an HID lamp is extremely unlikely to be affected when installed in place of a halogen bulb.

Stick to a 4500 - 5000k light, and perform the earth wiring mod to keep dipped lights on with mains, and it's unlikely a tester will ever notice enough to fail your car.

The DoT link posted above dates from 2006 and in that time I've gotten my ZX through 4 MOT tests with no problems!

Oh and you need the H3 kit.......

I know this response is a bit late but in the interest of providing a complete picture, here goes:

HID Kit for 300ZX:

Dip beam = H3

Main beam = H1 (although I advise against upgrading the main beam)

Fog lights = H3

Colour Ratings:

Good = 5000K (white light, no tinge, OEM Xenon look with excellent light output)

Best = 6000K (crisp white with slight blue tinge and good light output)

Illegal = 8000K+ : too purple and little light output

Approximate costs:

Ebay = from £30 (can be of questionable quality and usually poor or no post-sales service)

DTA (UK) = £91 (tried and tested top quality kit, 2 years warranty on ballasts & bulbs, UK-based)

Legalities:

Strictly speaking, retrofitted HID kits are illegal because they invalidate the headlight's E-mark certification. Aside from that, the car needs to be equipped with self-levelling and cleaning headlights. Up until recently, HID's weren't a MOT failure point however, this is about to change. I have it on good authority (although admittedly not from an official source) that in the near future MOT stations will have to fail all cars with retrofitted HID kits. I'm not 100% sure what the technical reasons behind it are but I imagine it has to do with poorly defined beam patterns and ill-adjusted headlights not to mention excessive glare for oncoming traffic and invalidated E-marks.

My view:

I have sold hundreds of HID kits over the past 4 years and have never had any customer get back to me saying that they failed an MOT or been pulled over on account of the HID kit. I always advocate that the customer ensures (a) the headlight alignment is checked and adjusted AFTER installing the HID kit and (b) that he/she ensures the headlights are kept as clean as possible at all times to minimise glare. One way of getting around the issue of MOT failure is to quickly refit the halogen bulbs for the duration of the test. Our HID kits are completely reversible and require no modifications at all. Swapping back to the halogen bulbs should take no longer than 5 minutes per side. If you've mounted the balasts underneath the headlight panel then you can leave those in place and just remove the HID bulbs. A quick check of the headlight alignment prior to the MOT will ensure the headlight system will pass the inspection. Simply refit and realign after the test.

Please note that the above "view" is my own and not that of this Club/Forum.

I hope the above information has helped paint a complete picture of what's what with respect to HID kits.

Having bought some cheap ones from ebay, i thought i had got myself a good deal, BUT alas, one of the balasts was not holding charge properly so sometimes worked, and sometimes didn't. I couldn't be arsed with dealing with Chinese customer service etc so ended up buying another balast off ebay which worked fine, but my £45 lights (with delivery) suddenly became £60 and still if i have a problem, i would have to deal with international customer services etc. So perhaps the moral of the story is that it is cheaper to go ebay, but your then kind of on your own, at least with a UK supplier you would have somewhere to go if they go wrong etc.

Best mod i have done to the car to be honest.

As a side note:

I can sort out any replacement parts (ballasts, bulbs and some wiring looms) for most eBay kits of Chinese manufacture. With the new parts you'll of course receive our 2 year warranty :)

HTH

Evening all

Mine has HID kits fitted, they were on when I bought the car. Never had any trouble at MOT time though. The nearside on is dimmer than the offside must be a prob with that ? Are the standard bulbs really that bad ?

Standard bulbs usually appear dim because the projector lens is dirty. Once the grime and dust is cleaned off the lens, its not too bad. An ultra bright or higher wattage bulb is better, i tried these before i got the HID's.

My first HID's were 35watt, at the time i wasnt happy with the brightness, so i bought the 55watt kit. Also i had cleaned the whole of the inside of the light and lens before fitting the 55w, so they may have been ok with the 35w kit.

I installed the HID kit supplied by the Zed Centre and they work a treat. They are 6K have gone though the MOT fine but more importantly made a massive difference when driving...I can actually see! If they were ever queried I would certainly put my argument forward on grounds of safety...drive a Zed with standard bulbs vs a Zed with HID...it's a no brainer!

Best of luck and enjoy your Christmas present.
