Hi there, i am new to this forum , i have a 93 300 ZX TT

the Cruise Control does not engage, i press the button on the console to activate and a light appears on the dash, all good so far, then i use the Stalk to set the speed, nothing happens, the second light does not appear or even flash, i have run the Nissan in bulit diagnostics as in hold the stalk down and turn the ignition on, then operate the stalk, press the brake pedal and shift into Drive etc, when i do this the light comes on and flashes quickly, i understand this shows there is no fault with the stalk , brak or gearbox, on this basis im lost and need guidance on how to trace the underlying problem, any help gratefully received

thanks

Neil

Stalk? what year is your car?

You cant set the cruise speed until around 45mph. Need a bit more info on the car to help with an answer.

its a K plate Jap import, it has an airbag steering wheel the seat belts are Not door mounted, so i understand its a 92-93 year vehicle , yes i was travelling above 45 , i was on the motorway doing a steady 70-75, pulled the stalk to set and nothing happened

Is your speedo in kph or have you had a speed convertor fitted or UK clocks?

75kph is 46mph

Im pretty sure that 92-93 didnt have the air bag steering wheel, 95 or 96 or convertible. 92-93 the cruise controls are on the steering wheel, it could be that the steering wheel has been added and the cruise stalk and not wired in properly

the speedo is in MPH, i am told the UK clock was fitted when the car was imported, it also has full history etc etc, the log book states it was first registered in the UK in 98, the vehicle appears to the eye , and backed up by its paper work to be an un molested version. all of the componenets for the cruise appear to be present in the engine bay and not after market fitted, it may be i have the year of the car wrong , everything else functions, or seems to

Have a look at the label on your seat belt, the date on that is a pretty good indication of when the car was actually made.

Hi Mate, didnt mean anything apart from the steering wheel and stalk was fitted, the cruise wouldnt be aftermarket, sometimes people add an aftermarket steering wheel or the air bag one, then discover they cant use the cruise control, so add the stalk or wheel boss with cruise buttons.

I would take the steering cowl off and check the wires are ok on the plug from the stalk.

Check the cruise control ecu in the passenger footwell, under the carpet next to the main ecu, it is marked as A.C.C.S, if all the wires look fine, then you may need to replace it, get a secondhand one from zedworld if needed.

It could be wiring, actuator, pedal switch out of alignment.

Take a read of this http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=140230&highlight=cruise+control

the imports had both a minimum and maximum speed within which the cruise control would work. cant remember off hand what it is but think it may be something like 45 and 70

most imports get a speedo converter chip rather than a set of UK clocks and the converter "fools" the ecu alowing the cruise to set at higher speeds

so first try it at 60mph to be sure

next look at the clutch and brake pedals, both of them have one or two switches (model dependant) when you are not pressing the pedal the switch should be depressed. if either the brake or clutch cruise control switch are released then cruise will not engage

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

It could also be the switch on the back of the brake pedal or clutch pedal (if applicable).

These switches act as a cruise cancel for obvious reasons, but if slightly out of adjustment or faulty, they stop cruise from being set. You will still get one cruise light on when you press the pod button, but the 2nd cruise light only lights when set is successful.

Remember the brake pedal has 2 switches. The other is the actual brake light switch.

My cruise cancel switch was broken on the brake pedal and so it wouldn't set.

£35 for a new one, easy, but fiddly change, job sorted.

The brake pedal light switch also cancels the cruise as a fail safe, but you would no if that one was faulty because your brake lights will be iffy.

If one just needs adjusting, sometimes you can tell by pulling the pedal upwards when at cruise speed to see if that sets.

The Jap spec cruise limit is 69mph, it will not hold after that. I swapped out the cruise ecu for a UK spec one to raise the cruise limit to 105mph.

thankyou everybody, to update the car is a 93 ( date taken from seatbelt ), i have now fitted a new Brain, tested the car , no change, changed the solenoid and actuator, tested car, still no change, as stated i can put the car into diagnostics and the second cruise light flashes, it continues to flash whatever function i try with the stalk, brake pedal, or gearbox, in fact it continues to flash when i drive off as well, yet it will not activate outside of test mode , anyine got any bright ideas, Relays , fuses may be the issue ?????????

Is your car an auto, from memory there is a switch above the brake pedal for disengaging the CC, if its stuck on the wrong position it will stop the CC engaging, but wouldnt throw up a fault as its saying basically the brake is pressed and will stop it working. Best to get it checked out by soneone who knows the system rather than throw parts at it. Even if you had a wiring diagram it may help eliminate the simple things like the brake or clutch switch position.

Cheers John

it is an Automatic, anybody know where the gearbox speed sensor is located,

Drivers side lower middle of the gearbox. If your speedo is working, it is unlikely the speed sensor, i would concentrate on checking the switches behind the pedals. As suggested, if one is out of alignment or seized/broken, it wont allow the CC to be engaged.

Normal UK is 30-90. Its really scary if you get going 90 and set it to cruise there then slow right down then hit resume when you are just above 30! Its like some crazy person has their foot on the loud pedal as it goes on boost to get back to 90 with you just holding the steering. Don't try this on a busy restricted road off course! I hit the brakes before it got back there. Bit of a feardy me.

Try lifting clutch pedal and/or brake pedal with your toe a little when trying to engage and this will show if its an out of adjustment microswitch. My other car needs the clutch pedal lifted any time I want cruise on and thats a lot with these damn average speed cameras in local ongoing roadworks with 15 miles of it. Its a good way to keep to the limit.

can anybody point me in the right direction for electrical schematics and trouble shooting procedures for the Cruise Control system, i follwed the link as posted by Groover http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=140230&highlight=cruise+control printed the diagrams out, started to review the schematics and realised that the block connector on my 93 Nissan cruise control module did not resemble the connector on the diagrams,( mine had blanks in different locations)so i could not perform any diagnostics or try to trace the fault ??????????/

thankyou everybody, the problem is now sorted, i traced the fault to being a faulty backup switch on the brakepedal.
