It can be done with the engine in, but you may as well do it with the engine out. its a lot easier and faster, plus you can do a proper job. not to mention that if you snap a bolt from turbo to manifold you may as well get the engine out to sort it out. Plus you can change other things while there before the engine goes back in for piece of mind so you know they are not going to fail on you in the near future, and require you to take the engine back out again.

i did a complete engine change with nothing more than a car park a set of ramps, 2 Axel stands, drainage jug, trolley jack, a socket set / spanners / 10" breaker bar, 3 x 3inch extensions, torx wrench and a RAC light that connects to the battery, around this time last year, ooh and loads of hot coffee

was loads of fun on my own :D

nah not any more lol :$ but i think its worth doing this time this car runs like a beauty its got stuf that i need from my old zx im going to get the bits i need and put it in the new one ... baisically make one from the two

Confused?!! Why get a new car when you've just payed out to seemingly fix another? Especially in double quick time?! And as said surely you have the turbo guru on speed dial?

out of interest mate, what did you use the torx wrench for? I can't remember having to use one..

do i have to get the gearbox disconnected aswell ? and if i decide to do the turbo whilst its in the car then will i have to move the engine like lift it?

he means torx as in torque. used to get the correct n/m on a bolt. i think anyway??

ahhh, got it now.. lol

Saffy: Yes the gearbox will need to be taken off the engine but it can be left in place.

you mean the fella who changed the last turbo has forgot how he done it .

if you leave the engine in place your not going to be lifting it with out lifting the rest of the car due to the gear box / engine mounts.

Easiest option, remove the gear box, saves a lot of hassle and you can lift the engine clear with out having to worry about catching anything, or dropping the front sub frame to get enough angle to lift the engine and gear box together.

So YOUR really suggesting removing a gearbox, which needs the prop undoing, draining of fluid, unplugging, dropping the exhaust, disconnecting of the gearstick is EASIER than undoing 4 crossmember bolts and the steering column u/j pinch bolt?? are you serious .

was for me, so yeah.

PS why does it need the prop undoing? just do what i did, unbolt it at the center bearing, let the center bearing hang and slide it out of the gear box, then move it to one side while still attached at the rear, when i did my engine change, i didn't have the luxury of having loads of room under the car to get the correct angle to take the gear box out with the engine.

the process jimmer is on about, is dropping the engine enough to get to the turbo, you will still need to disconnect the pipes at the front so you don't put pressure on these. but dropping the front sub frame and moving the steering U/J out of the way, can achieve one of two things, give you enough room to get the engine and gear box out together, or lower the engine enough so the side bulk head isn't obstructing your access to the drivers and passenger side turbos.
