If the blank that you are talking about is where the cruise control switch would be then the answer is no.The switch pack is in fact a pcb I tried that one and I couldnt find a way to graft a push button switch onto the pod.

You have a cruise board and button on the jap pod, that cant be changed to fog button front, but you could rewire to the cruise pins to be able to turn the fog on and off, but you wont have the fog light symbol,

P I T A This is!

This car has not got cruise on it, all i wanted to do is "tidy up" the binacle, at the moment i fitted a switch with a neon [mot standards] and it looks just messy.

What have you guys done?

I that ok with the mot man?

Technically wise it's OK

MOT legally wise is isnt!!

There is a different symbol for front and rear (Front = Diagonally down and pointing to the Left, rear straight out and pointing to the Right)

You can have your front fog lights on in Fog and misty conditions, but you should only have your rears on when visibility is below 200meters and NOT when someone is following behind (normal distance, not a mile back (you wouldn't see him anyway ;) ))

I hope that all makes sense?

Dave

Hhhmm, didn't know that, but comes to think of it, it does make sense.

I suppose a separate switch could be put in but I kind of think it's just a waste of time. It passes the MOT and the fogs work when needed - not that they are ever used and if they are put on, they will function as desired.

Interesting that no MOT joint has picked this up even the one who originally failed it for not having a rear fog and then passed it after it was done. Do you think that's just there interpretation of legality? ;)

Well that's the thing, it's purely down to interpretation! And the fact they may not of noticed that your front ones were on at the same time (No legal requirement for front fogs!)

Any of you guys got anymore thoughts on this dilema?

Just do what's been said above and run an extra relay off the one switch; you could then disconnect the front fogs for mot; remove them if they were stubborn over it. Can't see any reason why they would fail you for having the wrong symbol, the only requirement is a tell tale: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_130.htm

As far as i can tell (from reading the rules) hooking it up to the Front fog switch is perfectly fine for the MOT. There is no rule on how the tell-tale should look...it can even just be a lightup switch without any symbol.

This is how I had 2 of my previous Z's set up which went through numerous Mot's, and so is my slicky (although I dont have front fogs on it and its not been for mot).

i wouldnt have thought the type of switch that lights your fogs matters only the fact that you have fog lights . mine are wired into the front fogs . when i push the button fronts and rears are lit . all nice and tidy .

It should not make any difference that the fronts are on too.

On most Mercs, you switch on the fog lights by pulling the headlamp switch out. It's one notch for fronts and 2 for rears - so it's 100% impossible to have the rears on, without first having dipped headlights on and secondly, without the fronts being on as well.

I've had 3 Mercs now and that's how they come from the factory!

Exactly the same on our two Bmw`s.

Spot on Richard, pull out one notch and the front fogs come on and a green symbol lights up to indicate on, pull out another notch and the rear fog comes on with an orange illuminated symbol that is on alongside the green one

you could just stick a cruise control button on there so it looks like you've got it to neaten up the pod? Quick question too, my rear fog has a tell tale switch, the fogs wont work without the lights on, but only the sidelights, does it have to be so they only come on when dips are on?

I never said that you have to have the proper fog switch, with the proper symbol on it, all I said was that's what the symbols are.

And as for having them both on at the same time (which you would if they were both off the same single throw switch) then imagine this.... You are at the front in thick fog, and there is someone behind you. So do you think it's right that he has to put up with your bright rear fogs on all the time? Would you like it if you were following someone like that? No I'm sure you wouldn't.

Pretty sick to death of idiots who don't know how to use their lights properly in foggy conditions. Every member on here has passed a driving test (I assume), so you should all know the correct use of lights, and if you don't then I suggest you go and find a copy of the Highway Code and give it a good read! ;)

Good point Dave - with the German cars, one can of course have just the fronts on alone. I guess the reasoning being that if you need rears on, then you'd be stupid not to have the fronts on anyway..!!

And I agree on the idiots who drive with their rear fogs on for no apparent reason. Surely if you can see the car in front of you (who does not have rear fogs on), then you don't need your's on!!!???

To be honest, if it was foggy enough to really need fog lights, then I wouldn't drive so close that it'd annoy me!

agree with you rich . we turn em on and turn em off as we need them . if it wasnt for the mot test most of us wouldnt have fog lights at all seeing as most zeds are import .

as regards to having front fogs on and not rear fogs and the recommend reading material

being suggested . no comment

I've not come across these combined switches before, sounds like a good idea, especially on saving dash space.

Sorry Richard, that wasn't aimed at you ;)

In principle it does Dave - but it has a down side too. When it's really foggy xenon headlights are just too bright, so it would be ideal to run on sidelights with the front fogs. But you can't - German efficiency means fogs (either front or front and rear) can only be used viz ze dipped headlights.....

No worries mate - fully understood.......;):flowers:
