i have heard that phrase touted around recently on here and elsewhere.

I dont subscribe to it all all.

So here is an example to discuss.....................................

The story.

Bobgenie and myself needed some nice interior to finish off his new white Slicktop. And a few more bits n bobs too.

I also was short of some odds n ends for my own project so when someone local gave up on his 300ZX due to the headgasket starting to go I bought it.

although its a J spec Ser 1 it had been fitted with a mint ser 2 Alcantara interior!! Just what Bob needed. Most of the rest is not needed. Its a 2+2 TT auto with a UK rear bumper fitted??? I wouldnt dream of trying to fix it up either to use or sell so its a breaker.

Its a sad reflection on the (still) low values of these cars that once the headgasket goes and the ashtray is full its not worth fixing:cry:

Maybe you agree????

Maybe you dont??

Everyone told me to scrap mne, but regardless of cost its getting put back on road. Too many zeds get broke for the first problem there get. Just got to hope there will eventually rise in there value to reflect just how good these cars are.

hmm well i hung in there when my engine went twice and having done all the work on my zed exept for the last engine swap, from my experience i can say i know nearly everything about the zed as i have learned a lot about her, this could be an ideal oppertunity for someone to have a dabble and fix the head gasket your self, get in there get your hands dirty and learn a bit about the engine yes its fiddly and a bit of a pain but when its all done itll be worth it and save a load on labout costs, but then if things dont goto plan you could always break her then, but if you have the time give it a go :-)

agree far to good to break just due to a head gasket failure. fix em and keep zeds on the road. Having a passion to work on them is a must for any owner.

Looks like a nice example...

Im in the middle of the fence.

The car lover in me says keep it on the road, they will disapear if we dont.

The money side of things thinks, you'll get more in bits than you would selling.

Depends on your situation...

Unfortunately you have hit the nail on the head. they are worth more in parts than as a whole once something goes wrong with it. i suppose it would really depend on the overall condition of the car as to whether or not it would require fixing or breaking.

Take my Black zed for example, to look its OK, it has its flaws but that's what you would expect for a 20 year old car. although it was a project car. costs to get her on the road and then sell on, fell short of what i could expect to actually strip and sell as spares. if i repaired then sold, id actually lose money. and i think that's what it boils down too.

Unless you plan on keeping it once its fixed, then yes repair would be the better option, but if you have had enough of the car and want it gone, then either sell it as spares or repairs and take a hit, or sell as parts and make some cash back on it so you don't feel so bad lol

Its relavant this subject has come up as I`m about to scrap another zed and it really IS too good to break, but its costing me storage fees and as Big Jim has said its worth more in bits or in parts for me to keep, I`ve already stripped it down to chassis, so engine out next week and then underside and shes off the zed heaven, poor old girl

Id say brake it for parts,

The less there is the better and the more our cars will be

Until you need parts and cant get them!

It all depends on your outlook really.

We all know these cars are currently rock bottom prices. We know they are worth relatively nothing.

I have a really good example, I have also spent thousands making it and keeping it that way. It is still worth relatively little. Do I care? No.

These cars are unique, IMO special. They look great, go very well, getting very rare and are nice to drive.

If its all about money, then the 300zx is the wrong car. Its a car to buy and own because you want one, not because its all you can afford. Because if its all you can afford you are going to struggle to keep them good and something like a head gasket replacement is going to mean selling as spares or repair!

I know for a fact that my car is worth more in spares than a complete car, but I wouldn't break it.

Until you need parts and cant get them!

they will be stock piled some where

Keep it and repair it, apart from the head gasket has anything else gone on it?

No just the gasket, It starts up and runs smooth n quiet. No noises or nasty rattles. No smoke from turbos etc etc. Autobox is also spot on. Paint and bodywork are A1. Look at the tailgate. Mint and with a tailgate skin fitted. Everything works (aircon been disconnected).

I bought it cos of the lovely interior. And we are only using the trim. The leather seats are spot on and we dont need them cos Bob has some new Recaros on order.

Shocking really.

I dont want it on the road. I am coming to the end of the rebuild of my own slicktop so what would I want with a family estate version??? Many of you know how much I dislike 2+2 targas especially in slush box mode:sad:

But the harsh reality is that its worth more in parts than it is sat on my drive now. Lets face it nobody would give me £1000 for a car with a headgasket problem and no interior:hammer:

My view is going to be controversial but is not intended to offend anyone. I know economics and common sense rules in the end but here goes...

For people who are real Z32 fans (I have loved the car since it was launched in 1989) and have followed most Japanese cars closely (especially Nissans), it is heartbreaking and upsetting to see threads breaking up Z32s or selling them for pennies.

I can only imagine that those breaking these cars are people who have little or no idea what the Z32 is or have no respect for the great car.

Ultimately however, the reason the cars are in their hands in the first place is simply due to their disgracefully low price. If they held their value far better, only those who loved and respected these cars would buy them, and the last thing they would ever do is break them up.

Sadly, a mixture of over supply and abuse has meant that many original owners have let them go.

That said, the more that die means that there are less in the UK, which eventually should increase the overall value and therefore the price.

Also, plenty of spare parts available! Some good then...

i think there are some truths to that certainly

i remember when i was selling my last zed a guy rang up. and said he only wants to buy the car to make money on. which i though fair enough, but then he was like "yeah im gonna throw away the service history in the bin so i can clock the mileage and sell it as an "import".

and to think he was a trader who does it on a regular basis. that pissed me off that he was brazen enough to say that before even looking at it.

im guessing that why so many zeds have around 67k on the clock....supposedly

some people just dont really car as to what the zed is and see it as another old jap car etc

This would be ideal for him!!!

There is no service history.

Its already an import.:thumbup1:

there are no clocks in it to "clock"

So you could put some others in with 19,000 miles on. one careful owner from new!!:stupid:

Anyone got his phone number???:lol::lol::lol:

yeah typo i know. clocking is the term used to reduce the mileage of a car. and the guy was assuming that mine was a UK model which would likely have history with it

No you misunderstand me!

There are no clocks in this car now... they have been removed.!!

I hate to see good shells scrapped, but I dont know the solution.I've been to look at a few, ahem, 'roadworthy' Zeds over the years + theres still far too many rustbuckets out there..and a lot of filled+ sprayed too.
